The New Alhambra issued the following statement this evening: Clients and Patrons of the New Alhambra Sports and Entertainment Center: Today, a story began circulating that there would no longer be professional boxing, wrestling, or other events at the New Alhambra Arena (former ECW Arena). There is NO truth whatsoever to this story. A new boxing promotion is working at the building and had a successful debut show this past Friday night. Professional wrestling and other events (martial arts, concerts, private parties, etc.) WILL CONTINUE to be held in the building. The only thing that will probably be changing at some point is the name of the Arena & the fact that the facility will be going back more to its wrestling roots. There are events listed on the calendar of the Arena’s website up through July of this year with more to be added. Thank you for your time and your patronage. We hope you can help us make 2009 one of the best years in the building yet. -Alhambra Arena Management

After winning 2 Golden Globe awards earlier this month, Darren Aronofsky’s film “The Wrestler” is now in contention for the most prestigeous prize in Hollywood – the Academy Award. The Wrestler garnered two Oscar nominations on Thursday morning for its lead actor and actress. Mickey Rourke, who played Randy “The Ram” Robinson, is nominated Best Actor and is up against Richard Jenkins (“The Visitor), Frank Langella (“Frost/Nixon”), Sean Penn (“Milk”) and Brad Pitt (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”). Co-star Marisa Tomei, who played Robinson’s stripper girlfriend, was nominated for Best supporting actress. Her competition includes Amy Adams (“Doubt”), Penelope Cruz (“Vicky Cristina Barcelona), Viola Davis (“Doubt”) and Taraji P. Henson (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”). Surprisingly, Bruce Springsteen’s song “The Wrestler” was not nominated in the original song category, despite the fact that it won the Golden Globe in the same category.
