As noted before, Friday’s WWE SmackDown show in Chicago, Illinois featured Kevin Owens confirming that he has been dealing with a neck injury and will need to undergo surgery. Owens also stated that he will not be able to wrestle at WrestleMania 41 and his match against Randy Orton at the event will no longer be taking place.
A recent episode of the My Mom’s Basement with Robbie Fox podcast featured Owens as the guest. One of the topics discussed included Owens thoughts about his injury being caused during a regular match he had this past January and from a set of routine spots and nothing hardcore spots related.
“I am telling you—it happened in a regular match. No hardcore things, nothing. There were two very simple things that I’ve done a million times.”
Owens also stated that he had undergone a full-body MRI test this past December and the results showed no major issues and mostly just some wear and tear and some mild to moderate spinal stenosis. Owens also stated that WWE doctors reviewed his scan and told him everything looked good for someone with his in-ring mileage.
Owens also provided some details on the cause of his injury but did not go into any specifics.
“I felt great. But then in January, I had a match and in the match, two things happened that really jarred my neck. That’s when the issues started.
I didn’t land on my head, I didn’t get hurt—nothing felt wrong at the time.”
Owens also stated that he had a follow-up MRI test this week and the rsults had revealed significant damage to the point WWE medical staff informed him he would not be cleared for WrestleMania 41.
“Just not getting to wrestle Randy Orton at WrestleMania really sucks. That’s the part that bugs me the most.”
Owens also gave his thoughts about a potential timeline for his in-ring return.
“Most of the people that have gone through similar things—it’s probably six months to eight months to a year. So I would assume in that range. But I don’t really know.”
