Lucha legend Rey Mysterio Sr., real name Miguel Ángel López Díaz, passed away on Friday at the age of 69.
Mysterio Sr.’s passing was first announced by one of his sons on Facebook.
“Friends and family, I regret to inform you that my Father, Miguel Angel Lopez Dias, Rey Misterio Sr. passed away this morning. Will keep you informed. Thank you.”
Following his passing, Lucha Libre AAA paid tribute to Mysterio Sr. on Twitter.

Mysterio Sr. was the uncle of Rey Mysterio, also known as Rey Mysterio Jr., and great uncle of Dominik Mysterio.
Mysterio Sr.’s cause of death is currently not known but Super Luchas reported that he had been dealing with health issues for several months and was in a wheelchair for his last public appearances.
Mysterio Sr.’s wrestling career spanned from 1972 to 2009 and worked for a variety of wrestling promotions in Mexico including Tijuana Wrestling, World Wrestling Association, and AAA. While Mysterio Sr. officially retired in 2009, he had last wrestled in 2003.
During his career, Mysterio Sr. gave his blessing to his nephew Mysterio Jr. to use his ring name for his own wrestling career and changing it from Colibri.
Mysterio Sr.’s wrestling career notable achievements and accolades included being a one-time WWA World Junior Light Heavyweight Championship, one-time WWA Tag Team Champion with Rey Mysterio Jr., and induction into the Tijuana Sports Hall of Fame (2006).
