As noted before, The Lucha Brothers’ Rey Fenix’s contract had been originally set to expire this past September. AEW recently added almost a full year’s worth of injury time to Fenix’s contract and currently have no plans to release him. Fenix recently claimed on social media that he received “inhumane treatment” in AEW and was ignored for months when he needed a doctor.
Fightful Select reported that they had asked for a comment or statement from AEW both via message and in person at their All In: Texas Countdown Sale event on Monday but were informed that the they were not going to comment on the matter nor on Fenix’s medical claims.
Those spoken to within AEW reportedly stated that they were surprised by Fenix’s tweets even though the two sides are on the outs. One source spoken to reportedly admitted that there have long been communication issues within the company but had not heard of anything that would be constructed as “inhumane” and hadn’t spoken to Fenix about it. This same source reportedly stated that they heard that Fenix took issue with a doctor who had not cleared him at one point. It was reported that the context on this situation was not complete nor are additional details regarding it currently known.
Another source spoken to familiar with the matter stated that Fenix’s claims were untrue and the recent report of AEW “not being upset by the fake WWE news” was someone trying to “babyface themselves” in the contract situation. This same source reportedly stated that AEW officials had been upset about the word that the Lucha Bros had been in talks with WWE despite them having plenty of time remaining on their AEW deals.
It was reported that their sources stated that AEW officials had learned about the alleged talks between the Lucha Bros and WWE this past summer and around the time of their initial report. It was reported that AEW officials were obviously not happy when they found out about it and they would later find out more information over the matter.
It was also reported that Fenix’s status in the company is still up in the air and there were people within AEW that had indicated to Fightful last week that AEW and Tony Khan might actually give Fenix an early release on his contract. It was reported that there has been no update since then and one source spoken to stated that they believed almost any outcome for this situation would set an unfortunate precedent for the company.
