Misc. Wrestling News & Notes
Game Changer Wrestling recently announced that ECW legends Masato Tanaka and Tajiri will be making an appearance for the company at their The People vs. GCW event on January 19, 2025 at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, New York.
In a recent interview with The Business of the Business podcast, GCW owner Brett Lauderdale gave his thoughts about WWE’s new WWE ID program and if there has been any negative change on the indies over it. Lauderdale stated “Not changing anything yet. I don’t know of any impact yet. I think we’re all still figuring out what it is. Even people who are part of it, they’re still trying to figure out exactly what it is. It seems like a positive thing, based on the parameters, guidelines, and explanation of what it is. It seems to be helpful for wrestlers. There are not guidelines or restrictions when you work with WWE ID talent. Is that going to be the same forever? I don’t know. That’s the word right now. Until I see otherwise, I have no reason to think that’s going to change.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)
As noted before, WWE Hall of Famer Kevin Nash recently suffered a herniated discs injury. In a recent episode of the Kliq This podcast, co-host Nash provided an update stating “I thought about my options and everything else, and my first, when I go to Bio Accelerator in Columbia and see my stem cell people. I think that’s the best option for me. I think my shoulder tendinitis is horrendous. I’m just gonna go ahead…70% success rate of a back operation, and a 78 or 79% for my major issue in my back with stem cells. So I got a 10% better chance, and all they’re doing is injecting stem cells. I’m not being opened up. It’s a minimally invasive procedure. I’m going with Bio Accelerator.” Nash also gave his thoughts about the problems in his neck and back. Nash stated “My neck is fucked, but it’s not my issue right now. Mine is my L2, L3, and L3L4. I’ve got herniations there. When I went to the surgeon, he thought that the problem, the compression is on my L3 left nerve root. I had an EMG done on that, where they send electricity, so it’s definitely being compromised. [Asked if he gets numbness down his arm] No, it’s my lower back. It’s my quads not firing.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)
In a recent episode of the 1 Of A Kind with RVD podcast, ECW legend and WWE Hall of Famer Rob Van Dam gave his thoughts about why he has not made any appearances for GCW shows compared to other ECW legends. RVD stated “Yes, they have reached out. We weren’t able to reach a business agreement, I was out of their budget. Sabu had told me about them, saying that he thought it was a really cool company to work for. He compared it to ECW and said it was cool like that. That happened, and then they did reach out. They didn’t have the RVD fee, which is not a big surprise because I’m not priced to be out there on the road full-time.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)
In a recent interview with Fightful, AEW and NJPW official Rocky Romero gave his thoughts about the growing working relationships between companies in wrestling and being able to bridge the gap between promotions. Romero stated “No, for sure, for sure. I think that’s one of the unique things that I bring in my skillset that maybe others don’t have and plus I try to look at it as these relationships are important because in the end, it’s a business and it’s important to make money. It’s important to have projection for each company and each wrestler that’s involved in all this. So in the end, I think that that’s what’s important. If we keep the eye on the ball of what’s actually important, then don’t sweat the little stuff there’s always going to be issues. There’s always going to be problems. There’s going to be disagreements and that’s okay.” Romero also gave his thoughts about how WWE becoming bigger and bigger as a company made sense for other promotions to work together to try to stay competitive against it. Romero stated “But as long as we keep our eyes on the prize and see the bigger picture and another part of the big picture is WWE is a massive company and they’re only getting bigger and bigger now with the merger. So for the rest of us who are outside of that WWE bubble it makes sense to work together and kind of have this union between these companies who that have been around for 50+ years, like New Japan or CMLL and AEW has just been around for five years, but has in five years done some tremendous, tremendous things in the world, you know? So I think it all makes sense. I feel like I do want to speak on this.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)
