ROH Supercard of Honor 2024 Post-Show Media Scrum: Mark Briscoe, Kyle Fletcher, Tony Khan on The Boys Claims About Their Releases, Reason for AEW Talent Releases, Megan Bayne

Ring of Honor held a post-show media scrum following Friday’s Supercard of Honor 2024 event in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Some of the notable highlights included:

• During his portion of the media scrum, Mark Briscoe gave his thoughts about what he would say to his late brother Jay over his ROH World Championship victory. Briscoe stated “I love you, dawg. I love you, dawg. There are no words, man. It’s just too many coincidences for it to be a coincidence. I wear my faith on my sleeve. God is good. Stuff like this, where the tragedy that happened, you don’t want to go on or get out of bed. Then nights like tonight, this what gives me comfort. It’s what helps me move on. It’s not easy. Nights like tonight make it a whole hell of a lot easier. I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but there are no words. I love you, dawg. Help me out, be with me. Before he moved on and moved up, when we went out for a match, sometimes there are those nerves and jitters. He’d say, ‘Shit, dawg, all we got to do is go out there, walk out there, and let them balls swing.’ Until we meet again. Just trying to do him proud.“
• During his portion of the media scrum, Kyle Fletcher confirmed reports of his recent absence from AEW and ROH was due to him needing to sort out work visa issues. Fletcher stated “As match preparation goes, that was my first wrestling match in over a month. I had to go back to Australia, I had visa, not issues, but stuff I had to get sorted. I had to get a new visa. I came back on two days notice before the pay-per-view, just managed to get back for the pay-per-view, which was awesome. They announced I was wrestling Will Ospreay, which is possibly the biggest opportunity of my life, my career, against one of my best friends. That pressure, especially being my first match in a over month, was huge. I think it’s so important, I have found, to be constantly prepared for any opportunity to arise. If you get complacent or you’re not happy with where you are and you let your preparation in the gym, your diet, slip by the wayside, those opportunities get thrust into your lap and maybe you don’t deliver. While I was in Australia, waiting for this visa, I kept all that up and I keep all that up all the time because I never know when that next opportunity is going to come knocking. I was just happy I was in the shape I was in to perform in that match.“
• During his portion of the media scrum, ROH owner Tony Khan gave his thoughts about The Boys’ recent claims and statement regarding their releases from AEW being different than what he had stated. Khan stated “I have not seen their exact statement. After the show [Supercard] I heard a little bit of this as I was coming back. I stand by what I said, and also I’ve only owned ROH for two years. There’s a long history of ROH. It was my call to bring them back. I liked their presentation with Dalton [Castle] and I like them both personally. I’ve had a lot of good experiences with them, and I would be open to working with them again in the future. But their have been times when they came and have done great things for us. We did the House Rules tour… in the south and I loved having them. And they’ve been to a lot of the Saturdays, but there have been some times from my era of ROH, and I’ve been told from the company I inherited, other times in the past, and I’m just going off my experiences. As for that, I did talk about that and confirm. I think there’s two sides to that story, but I appreciate you asking about it. I know yesterday they said ‘stay tuned,’ so I stayed tuned, and then I heard, and I am not moved. But thank you.”
• In a follow-up question, Khan stated “Even with The Boys, I disagree with the point on travel and in the history of ROH, and working with us, that there hadn’t been a couple of times where they didn’t make and it made me change stuff. On the other hand, I really like both of them. Whether we agree or not about that point of contention, I think it’s regardless. They were great and a great part of Dalton’s act. I like both of them.“
• On the topic of AEW’s recent talent releases, Khan stated “This year, I have been very active, not only in the free agent market, but in the production budget. There are things tonight, for example, on one song alone, I spent a year’s pay for most pro wrestlers in this business. The budget with not only free agency, but production, is very high. Also, we’re going into a contract year. I plan to continue being very active, not only in free agency, but in the production of the show, and producing great content. Going into this year, I have to look at where we’re at. I had spent more than I had planned going into this year. I really love our roster and where we’re at. I’m very supportive of everybody we have here and everybody who has ever worked here. This particular group, it was not easy choices to make. With this group, I would be happy to take any of them back under the right circumstances. I have no bridges burned with any of them. For us this year, it’s an important year. I’m looking forward going into the media rights year and being very aggressive and putting our best foot forward doing the best wrestling we can. I expect there will be people who will want to come to AEW and ROH. We’re doing great wrestling and this is a great place to work.“
• On the topic of the idea of ROH going back to the Universal Studios in Florida for ROH TV tapings, Khan stated “That’s a budgetary thing. It’s the difference between hundreds of thousands and, annually, millions of dollars in taping costs. It’s several million dollars. When you’re looking at the budget, that’s a good place to look. I would rather protect as many people as possible when looking at the budget. That’s millions of dollars that we’re able to put into the roster we have now, the people here, and production. I love those tapings and doing it at Universal, but it is very cost effective to tape together. There are a lot of positives carrying the crew together. People are able to come and work on TNT and get experience. People have floated back and forth. It’s a difference, over the course of a year, it’s millions of dollars. That’s part of the thinking. I love the Universal tapings. I would love to get back to that if the finances make sense, but I definitely think it’s a logical thing the way we’ve been doing it.“
• On the topic of Megan Bayne’s recent stint in Stardom, Khan stated “There’s been a wrestler from AEW, Megan Bayne, who had a great run in Stardom. I thought it was a great excursion, but there has probably not been as much communication as I would have liked. I’d say there’s been more communication just in a couple of weeks than there had been in several years. It speaks to the great management at STARDOM now.“
