AEW CEO Tony Khan held a media scrum on Thursday to promote this Saturday’s Full Gear 2023 event at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, California.
Some of the notable highlights included:
- On the topic of Sting’s final run of his active wrestling career, Khan stated that they wanted to make the most out of Sting’s last run in wrestling.
- On the topic of if there is a desire within AEW to increase female involvement backstage following reports AEW Chief Legal Office Megha Parekh reducing her work in AEW over focusing more on NFL matters, Khan mentioned Sarah Stock and Madison Rayne as people he currently relies a lot on backstage. Khan praised Stock’s work helping out both the men and women on their roster and her ability to speak Spanish being a positive in working with luchadors in the company.
- On the topic of MJF’s work in the company, Khan praised MJF stating that he has been the face of AEW in a lot of different ways.
- On the topic of Bryan Danielson being recently pulled from an upcoming event for WrestleCade, Khan stated that he does not know the reason why Danielson was pulled nor had any involvement with it. Khan stated that they are waiting for Danielson to be cleared from his broken orbital bone injury to resume flying for shows. Khan stated that Danielson actually drove by car to be at this past Saturday’s Collision show in Oakland, California.
- On the topic of Toni Storm’s current “Timeless” character, Khan stated that he had approached Storm a long while ago regarding a character change for her in the company. Khan stated that this was around the same time that AEW wanted to bring in Mariah May which ended up taking longer than they expected. Khan also stated that he has been heavily involved with Storm’s “Timeless” character and has tried to feature her more and present differently. Khan also hinted that there is more development to come for her character.
- On the topic of his habit of hyping up announcements for shows, Khan stated that he wants to create engagement for television and social media for AEW.
- On the topic of Full Gear 2023’s live gate revenue, Khan stated “We are approaching it. We have a great gate. I think it’s closer to the $900,000 range right now and we have a chance to make a push with a big walk-up. It’s going to be one of the biggest crowds we’ve had all year and a lot of fun.“
- On the topic of the current pay-per-view buys number for AEW All In at Wembley Stadium, Khan stated that the event has generated over 200,000 buys.
- On the topic of AEW’s revenues for this year, Khan stated that this year has been their best year revenue-wise in company history. Khan also stated that their run of PPV events have brought in money “hand over fist” for the company.
- On the topic of AEW cross-promoting the upcoming The Iron Claw film featuring MJF among its cast, Khan stated “With ‘The Iron Claw,’ yes, I do think there is a great opportunity for us to promote ‘The Iron Claw’ and I’m optimistic that we can. It’s very cool that we’ll also be going to Dallas along the way, which is pretty neat and means a lot to me. It’s something we do every December and great timing with the release of ‘The Iron Claw.“
