Cain Velasquez was released by WWE as part of the releases that happened earlier this month, Dave Meltzer reported on Wrestling Observer Radio.
Velasquez signed a “lucrative” multi-year contract in October, but was only really used for an angle and match against Brock Lesnar at Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia on October 31, which resulted in Brock Lesnar “avenging” his UFC loss to Velasquez from years ago. Velasquez also wrestled at a house show in Mexico on November 30, teaming with Humberto Carrillo to defeat Anderson & Gallows, but has not been used by WWE since.
“It was a multi-year deal, and just like everybody else, they signed him to a giant deal, and now that they’re cutting back, one of the things in those deals is that they’ve got the right to cut people,” Meltzer said. “So people who thought that they signed multi-year contracts for high dollar figures, this is how it goes.”
Gerald Brisco Furloughed
Gerald Brisco is another name that has recently come out as part of this month’s WWE furloughs and releases. Brisco, who has been with WWE since 1984 and has been working as a talent scout, has been furloughed, Dave Meltzer said.
