Lucha Underground executive producer Erik Van Wagenen spoke with Daily DDT about the promotion, their plans and more. Check out the highlights:
On what to expect from the show: “Viewers should expect a unique take on classic lucha libre. The action is fast and high-flying, and the production values equal anything seen on television today.”
On how the show is different from WWE and TNA: “We want to bring a completely different look and feel to sports entertainment. We think that there are many wrestling fans who are looking for something fresh and different. WWE and TNA’s focus is the live event business, whereas our focus is creating a compelling television series.”
On what attracted the talent to come to this show: “We don’t tour across the country every week. Our home is boyle heights and most of us live locally in los angeles. But even for those that live elsewhere, we shoot on the weekends and so our cast and crew can have m-f to do other things and then come work for us on weekends. Our schedule allows a lot of flexibility and time to prepare and recover.”
On working with guys like John Morrison and Chavo Guerrero, Jr.: “Those three guys are all total pros, as are Konnan and Vampiro from Mexico. They act as both performers and producers and they bring a perspective on wrestling that is appreciated by both the staff and respected in the locker room. We value their opinions and suggestions and their experience is hopefully reflected in the final product.”
On potential live events: “Right now, we have no plans for any live events. We are a television show first and foremost, and we are focused on putting the best possible product on the El Rey Network.”
On where he sees the promotion in three to five years: “I would expect us to still be on the air and doing very well, not just domestically on the El Rey Network but also in foreign markets around the world.”
