As noted before, Charlotte Flair and current WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton were involved in an incident during Friday’s WWE SmackDown show revolving around their promo segment going very off script over Stratton bringing up Flair’s personal life issues and Flair responding back implying Ludwig Kaiser was cheating on Stratton.
PWInsider’s Mike Johnson reported that those spoken to stated that the current belief is that Stratton had fired away on Flair in retaliation for how Flair “ate her up” on a previous face-to-face segment during the March 21st SmackDown show.
Several of those spoken to reportedly stated that they felt Stratton had stood up for herself in a way that put the spotlight back on her while others spoken to had felt that the segment going awry towards the end did not help anyone.
Those spoken to reportedly also stated that Flair was obviously thrown by the crowd and allowed Stratton’s shots to hit even harder.
In regards to Flair’s comments about Kaiser after Stratton had already left the ring and began heading to the back, one source spoken to described it as it coming off like “a flailing shot from a boxer who didn’t realize they were KO’d” and that Flair was obviously “gotten to.”
Fightful Select reported that their sources stated that the promo segment was a hot topic backstage among the women’s roster since it happened.
In regards to the segment going off script, it was reported that those spoken to did not confirm outright that Flair and Stratton had went off script but the general belief backstage from talent and staff was that it wasn’t supposed to do down that way.
In regards to the cause of the segment going off script, it was reported that the current belief is that the Chicago crowd were the cause for the segment flipping in direction. Those spoken to stated that Flair was visibly rattled by fans siding with Stratton and tried to get the crowd back on her side only for Stratton had already stolen the moment and closed it with an insult that left everyone in shock.
It was reported that Flair did not appear to be pleased over what happened and one veteran talent spoken to stated “Going at Charlotte in that manner can be daunting, but it’s something every talent has to be willing to do.” Another talent spoken to reportedly stated that Stratton had to “fight back” after Flair took control of their previous promo segment weeks earlier.
In regards to WWE editing out the personal jabs lines from their YouTube version of the segment, it was reported that this decision was a “specific directive” from high level WWE officials.
Following the segment, Kaiser responded on Twitter to Flair’s comments about his relationship with Stratton.
