More on AEW Dynamite Viewership for March 5th

The March 5th episode of AEW Dynamite saw AEW gain a slight increase in overall viewership but suffered a large decline in key demographic ratings and key demographic rankings.

AEW drew 600,000 viewers and a 0.13 key demographic rating on TBS. AEW’s key demographic ranking for that night was #24 place.

Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the main reasons for AEW’s declines this week was due to a combination of going head-to-head against a replay of WWE’s NXT show for The CW’s New York and Chicago markets and a large decline in their overall key demographic viewership group, which was down 28.1% compared to last week’s show. This reportedly offset the large gain from their Over 50 demographic viewership group, which was up 20% compared to last week’s show. Meltzer reported that AEW’s key demographic rating was the lowest ever for a Dynamite show in its regular timeslot in series history. Meltzer reported that AEW’s spikes for their Over 50 viewership and overall key demographic viewership groups for this week’s show was very peculiar for an AEW show since the loss of viewers to MAX wouldn’t have caused that type of spike for both groups in opposite directions nor the weaker than usual ratings from their lead-in programming. Meltzer also reported that this was not just an AEW issue due to all of TBS’ programming that night had declined across the board. Meltzer reported that the viewership on MAX for the show is currently not known. AEW’s lead-in programming Big Bang Theory reportedly did not chart meaning that it drew less than a 0.11 rating.

In terms of head-to-head competition, the NBA game of Miami Heat vs. Cleveland Cavalier drew 1,036,000 viewers on ESPN, the College basketball game of Florida vs. Alabama drew 898,000 viewers on ESPN2, the College basketball game of Tennessee vs. Ole Miss drew 835,000 viewers on ESPN2, the NHL game of Washington Capitals vs. New York Rangers drew 294,000 viewers on TNT, Survivor drew 4,314,000 viewers on CBS, Expedition X drew 616,000 viewers on Discovery Channel, The Challenge drew 304,000 viewers on MTV, and Sistas Series drew 715,000 viewers on BET.

In terms of key demographic viewership, AEW had 169,000 viewers. AEW’s Males 18-34 had 26,000 viewers (down 25.7%), Females 18-34 had 24,000 viewers (down 54.7%), Males 35-49 had 89,000 viewers (down 20.5%), and Females 35-49 had 30,000 viewers (down 14.3%). Meltzer reported that AEW’s males/female viewership split was 68% in favor of males.

In terms of yearly comparisons, AEW was down 23% in overall viewership and down 52.4% in key demographic viewership. Meltzer reported that one main reason for the large declines is due to the unknown key demographic viewership migration on MAX compared to last year’s show.
