AEW Reportedly Dropped Plans for Jeff Jarrett Retirement Tour & AEW World Title Chase Storyline

Fightful Select’s Sean Ross Sapp reported in a recent Q&A article that his sources stated that AEW officials recently dropped their plans for Jeff Jarrett’s retirement tour storyline.

Sapp reported that the reason was due to the storyline was not working out the way AEW officials had hoped. AEW officials reportedly also felt the same way for Jarrett’s AEW World Championship chase storyline as part of it.

Sapp also reported that AEW CEO Tony Khan had originally planned for Jarrett’s feud with MJF to go on longer and to lead to a match between the two at Revolution 2025. Those plans were also dropped in favor of going in a different direction for MJF and him having a match with Hangman Adam Page instead at the event.

AEW News & Notes

Netflix recently released the official debut trailer for the upcoming Happy Gilmore 2 film featuring MJF among the cast.

The Outrunners’ Truth Magnum recently visited Omaha to give a pep talk speech to the University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks men’s basketball team ahead of their 2025 NCAA Tournament game against #2 seed St. John’s on Thursday in Providence, Rhode Island.

In a recent interview with 1620 The Zone’s The Connor Happer Show, Turbo Floyd gave his thoughts about The Outrunners having a potential rematch with The Hurt Syndicate in the future. Floyd stated “We are the new adopted sons of Omaha. We are going to be in action. I don’t know what we’re going to do, but we will be there. If we get another shot at the Hurt Syndicate, they’re going to be talking about the Girth Syndicate afterwards, trust me.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)

In a recent interview with The Bootleg Kev podcast, Swerve Strickland gave his thoughts about his comparisons for the differences between WWE and AEW and how fans can still enjoy both at the same time. Strickland stated “It’s almost like you get the big box offices movies and all that stuff over there, but over there you don’t get green screen, you don’t get wires. Can you friggin act? That’s what AEW is. You have to act in order to perform in our films. We’re A24. The performances and acting have to be pristine. You can enjoy both and both are successful. That’s the beauty of it.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)

In a recent episode of the What Happened When with Tony Schiavone podcast, co-host Tony Schiavone gave his thoughts about the “Hollywood Ending” match between Mariah May and “Timeless” Toni Storm at AEW’s Revolution 2025 event. Schiavone stated “I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that Toni Storm is my favorite female wrestler of all time. Mariah May is a close second because it’s been such a great story. It’s been a wonderful story. But Toni Storm’s character…just absolutely wonderful. Congratulations to RJ City, too. He’s been one of the driving forces behind that whole storyline.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)

In a recent interview with the Something to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard podcast, WWE Hall of Famer John Bradshaw Layfield gave his thoughts about the online criticisms over the amount of bloodshed in the “Hollywood Ending” match for the AEW Women’s World Championship at AEW’s Revolution 2025 event. JBL stated “I didn’t see the match. I saw the social media clips, and I watched all of them. That’s kind of how I keep up with things. I don’t always watch matches, but I always keep up with the social media clips. When Eddie [Guerrero] and I did it, we needed something big, and it was at the Staples Center also. We needed something big. People say Eddie bladed too deep, no, he didn’t. He had what was called a business blade, and we used to always call it a business blade. It looked like a dagger. We needed something like that, and I don’t know if they did or not. I don’t have an issue with it. It’s shocking, it’s gory. Especially when it’s women because you’re not used to that. So people are talking about it. When they’re talking about it, I’m not sure they’re talking about it in a bad way, but they’re talking about it. I think that’s great. AEW’s had a hard time getting a lot of buzz recently. People have kind of turned on them. They were the darling for a while, and when you’re the internet darling, it’s a catch 22 because just as being the internet darling is great, they can turn on you, and you’re the internet goat at that point and they want to kick you around. That’s kind of what AEW has fallen into. So to me, I think it’s created the buzz that they probably wanted, and I don’t know. I’m the last person to say, but I don’t feel like I had a problem with it.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)
