A recent episode of the Tunnel Talk podcast featured The Young Bucks’ Matthew & Nicholas Jackson as the guests. One of the topics discussed included the Young Bucks’ thoughts about how AEW’s creative plans for their most recent AEW World Tag Team Championship reign had changed “about five times” throughout it.
Nicholas Jackson – “For instance, this last run we just had, we were supposed to drop those titles months and months before we actually dropped them. Creative changed, I would say, four to five different times in the last, like six months. At one point we were going to lose the belts to a certain team, and then a month later, it changed to another team. I remember Private Party came up to us, actually, and they were, they mentioned about wanting to do a long-term program with us, and we’re like, ‘Well, sorry, man, Tony just gave us the layout of what we’re doing, and that’s not in the cards.’ Something changed. We ended up wrestling them in a match in Seattle. We tore the house down, and as soon as we got backstage, we knew, alright, it’s in Tony’s eyes. He was like ‘I think we have something,’ and Matt and I thought the same exact thing, and we’re like, we gotta pivot, we gotta change our plans again. That was the fourth time changing plans for those titles to be dropped, and we were happy, though, because we wanted to put those guys over, they deserved the spotlight, and it’s been five years now, so they were ready for a big bush. I’m just glad Matt and I got to give them that last shove before we left.”
Matthew Jackson – “I feel like the reaction that they got was so strong. Everyone was saying, ‘God, that felt like an old-school AEW pop,’ like when the Lucha Brothers beat us in the cage. There’s something about when we’re the bad guys, we’re fighting a team, and they come from underneath, and we’re the champs, and then they beat us for the belts. We know how to get the people on the babyfaces’ side. I think that’s one thing I’ll pat ourselves on the shoulder about. We’re probably one of the best at that.”
Fightful Select reported that their sources stated that AEW officials had plans at one point for the Young Bucks to lose the AEW World Tag Team titles in an Elite Roulette match. It was reported that this match would have featured a random team chosen to face the Young Bucks for their AEW World Tag titles at the time.
It was reported that the Young Bucks wanted to lose the tag titles in a squash match and were hoping for a “certain tag team” to squash them and take the gold. The team in question reportedly was The Outrunners based on those spoken to within AEW. It was reported that those plans were changed in the end for Private Party to be the team to dethrone the Young Bucks instead following the reception to their match at WrestleDream 2024.
