Tony Khan Comments on “I Think Most of the Top Black Wrestlers in the World Are Now in AEW”
In a recent interview with CHGO Sports, AEW CEO Tony Khan gave his thoughts about the representation of black wrestlers on AEW programming and if pushing people like Swerve Strickland, The Hurt Syndicate, and Ricochet was a conscious decision or if it was about their talent as well.
“I think you just said it. I’m conscious of it, but I also think that these are some of the best wrestlers in AEW you just named. So we’re really lucky to have those great stars. We’ve been fortunate to be able to build up some great stars and also have a lot of great free agents come in to where I think so many of the top wrestlers, some of the top Black wrestlers in the world are in AEW, and I really think most of the top Black wrestlers in the world are now in AEW. But I think that is a conscious thing, but I also think it’s great.”

Backstage Update on AEW’s Full Gear 2024 Match Plans for Costco Guy AJ
AEW’s Full Gear 2024 event this Saturday at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey currently featured a Zero Hour Pre-show match of Big Boom AJ (Costco Guy AJ) vs. QT Marshall.
Fightful Select reported that their sources stated that AEW officials’ original plans for the AJ vs. Marshall feud for their Full Gear 2024 event was for the program to play out exactly as it has been in regards to being away from AEW television and AJ promoting the match as part of a media tour. Those spoken to reportedly stated that the reason for this decision was due to AEW officials did not want to “discourage” their talents by featuring this feud over full-time storylines and feuds on AEW television.
AEW officials reportedly changed their plans following the buzz AJ has generated for his match leading to the decision for AJ to have an on-screen segment for Wednesday’s Dynamite show in Reading, Pennsylvania.
It was reported that AEW officials have been very happy with the work AJ has done in promoting his match and those within the company have been impressed with how “respectful” AJ and his family have been throughout the process. One talent spoken to reportedly stated that AJ’s work in promoting the match made it clear that AJ was still a pro at wrestling, despite the fact he had wrapped up his indie career almost two decades earlier.
In regards to who came up with the idea for the match, it was reported that this was something that Marshall and AEW producer Sonjay Dutt came up with as an idea for Full Gear. Marshall and Dutt reportedly had contacted AJ regarding his potential interest in a match in AEW.
