AEW News & Notes

Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite show in Bridgeport, Connecticut featured Serena Deeb making a surprise appearance. Following Britt Baker’s victory over Penelope Ford, Deeb came out to the stage with her flag and engaged in a staredown with Baker teasing a future match between the two. This was Deeb’s first appearance in AEW since this past October’s Dynamite 5 Year Anniversary show.

In a recent interview with the Casual Conversations with The Classic podcast, Aubrey Edwards gave her thoughts about how she had requested to referee the Bryan Danielson vs. Zack Sabre Jr. match at last year’s AEW WrestleDream event. Edwards stated “I think the one (match I’ve refereed) that stands out the most in my mind is WrestleDream last year with Bryan Danielson versus Zack Sabre Jr. I remember when it got announced. I was actually at N.E.W., and I saw the graphic backstage and immediately text Paul Turner who’s our senior official and does all the assignments. I go, ‘Paul, I know I don’t ask for anything often. But this was literally my dream match before I ever stepped into the ring so can I please (have) this? Please?’ And he said, ‘Sure, yeah, no problem’ and then the day of, we actually found out that it was right before the (Chris) Jericho match. So I had to do an hour straight in the ring for that show, and I was sick the weekend before so I could only breathe out of one nostril. Both of my matches went extremely well so I’m like, ‘Dude, this is my Jordan flu game. This is awesome.’” (Transcript h/t: PostWrestling.com)

In a recent interview with Ring The Belle, Kris Statlander gave her thoughts about the current state of AEW’s Women’s division and its recent growth in the company. Statlander stated “Obviously, it’s amazing. We’re getting multiple matches a show. I think it’s because we are, so many women are just continuing to step up their game on a consistent basis and try so hard and we have so much to prove all of the time, but we are proving it. We are showing that we are one of the most exciting parts of every show that we are a part of. It’s very humbling and honoring to be a part of it and to constantly be, no, this is what you want to watch. There’s so much going on and I’m thankful to be a part of it in any amount. There’s so many people that I have never worked with and that I haven’t wrestled that I want to wrestle. I feel like that just keeps me wanting to keep working on myself and improving and stepping up my game all the day so people don’t just see me and think I’m a one trick pony. I’m gonna keep changing everything I do and keep improving myself. I want to put on great matches with everyone that I can. There’s so many girls that I haven’t wrestled and I have to beat up every single one of them as soon as possible, I don’t know what we’re waiting for.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)

In a recent interview with the Stick To Wrestling podcast, Adam Cole gave his thoughts about his interest in sharing the ring again with Bryan Danielson in the future and his belief that Danielson is one of the greatest wrestlers of all-time. Cole stated “Yes. Yes. No doubt. I respect Bryan Danielson so much. Everybody does. Bryan is so universally loved, respected, and admired. Not just by the fans, but literally by every wrestler I’ve ever met. Bryan is, without question, one of the greatest of all time to ever do this. I look back at the one match we had on SmackDown and I think back so fondly of that night and that moment. That was the first time we had ever stepped into the ring together. It was a dream come true for me. It was an honor to step into the ring with Bryan Danielson. I got so excited at the idea because we both debuted the same night in AEW, I thought, ‘We’re going to get the chance to do it again in AEW and I can’t wait.’ At least now, for the time being, it seems like that probably won’t happen. That’s a bummer for me, but Bryan’s health and safety and legacy are the most important things. I’m glad Bryan is able to rest and heal. Bryan is one of the greatest to ever do it. Selfishly, I do wish I could have stepped in the ring with him again. Who knows. Never say never. Maybe someday.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)
