AEW News & Notes

AEW recently released a new AEW Timelines video featuring the “Best of Bryan Danielson Part 1: 2021-2022”

As noted before, Bandido has been out of action for AEW since June of 2023 due to a broken wrist injury. WrestlePurists’ Ibou reported in a recent episode of the WP Dynamite Recap show that his sources stated that Bandido was in attendance backstage at this past Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite show in Salt Lake City, Utah. Bandido reportedly was telling people backstage that he is ready to make an in-ring return.

AEW CEO Tony Khan revealed on Twitter that he had a recent meeting with London Mayor Sadiq Khan. Khan statedIt was great to see the Mayor of London @SadiqKhan, and I was honored to stand with him to unveil the AEW World Championship belt with the special @FulhamFC side plates!

In a recent interview with the No Contest Wrestling podcast, Swerve Strickland stated that he recently had a pitch meeting with Warner Bros Discovery regarding a new documentary project based on him. Strickland stated “This week, we ended up meeting with Warner Brothers and pitching it. Things are looking very very good. We have award winners like the Lucas Brothers, that name holds a lot of weight. He was like, ‘I’ve done a lot of pitch meetings in Hollywood, it never goes this smooth.’ Things are opening up.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)

As noted before, Maria Kanellis announced this past July that a mass was recently discovered on her adrenal gland and she is currently scheduled to undergo surgery this month for retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy. Kanellis’ husband and AEW/ROH talent Mike Bennett provided an update on Thursday on Twitter stating that Kanellis’ surgery went well and thanked everyone for their support. Bennett statedMaria’s surgery went well. She is staying overnight at the hospital for observation and should be released tomorrow. My wife is a badass. Thank you to everyone who’s reached out. We love y’all so very much.

In a recent episode of the ARN podcast, WWE Hall of Famer and former AEW talent Arn Anderson gave his thoughts about AEW’s new media rights deal with Warner Bros Discovery. Anderson stated “I’m very happy for Tony Khan and all of his crew, everybody that works there. Like I said, we need – when wrestling is flourishing, notoriously every available company is doing well. When they catch on fire, then it just causes a competition that everybody is a better product. And so, that’s what I hope for. Let’s see how it goes.” Anderson also gave his thoughts about his issues with people wanting to see AEW shut down. Anderson stated “Probably won’t die in my lifetime. Too many resources. Too many resources. He’s got a talent list 10 miles long. He’s got, forget about the TV deal that they signed, think of all the other assets that him and his family, the Khan family have to draw from. I don’t want to see them die. Who the hell would want to see them die? [That’s] just insane. I feel like the company is going to get bigger and stronger, and it’s going to evolve, and it’ll be interesting to see.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)

In a recent interview with Uproxx, Daniel Garcia gave his thoughts about his belief that there are some podcasts that try to make a new career off of hating on AEW due to it being the current very popular thing to do in the wrestling business. Garcia stated “I do think that there is a lot of positive influences in the wrestling world when it comes to wrestling media. I think Busted Open is a net positive for wrestling. But then there’s other podcasts with people who are clearly just looking for clicks. Hating on AEW is a very popular thing and it gets people a lot of attention. And I feel like a lot of these things come from people who retired their jerseys. We never hung it in the rafters and we don’t even remember what their number was on their jerseys. A lot of those people are trying to get a new career off hating on AEW and hating on people who are trying to be successful. And it’s just, it’s sad to see, I hope I never have to go through that when I’m older.

In a recent interview with the AEW Unrestricted podcast, Lio Rush gave his thoughts about how much different he is as a person now compared to his first run with AEW. Rush stated “I think last time, I had a lot of fear. I think I was going into it scared. It almost felt like I was getting another opportunity at being Lio Rush on television, but it almost didn’t feel fair that I had to do it in this way. I was still so young. I was going through so much during that time, that was during the pandemic so everything outside of what AEW was was obviously going on and it was kind of just a disaster off the jump. It was nobody’s fault, I think it just was not the right time. I don’t think it was the right time for me, I don’t think it was the right time for AEW to have me right there in the mental state that I was in. It wasn’t fair for both parties. I’m in a space where I feel confident, I feel a lot wiser, I feel a lot more prepared than I was before and I know what I can bring to the table and I want to offer that. I want to be a part of what AEW is doing and I want to be a part of the people that make AEW what it is. I’m just going into it with a much different mindset, and I think that’s the biggest difference.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)
