AEW Reportedly Renewed Contracts for Several AEW Referees Earlier This Year
AEW reportedly renewed the contracts for several of their referees earlier this year, according to Fightful Select.
It was reported that their sources stated that several of their referees had been on one-year deals with the company and these deals were renewed as far enough back that they might have been halfway into those contracts.
It was also reported that it is currently not known which AEW referees were given new deals but those spoken to stated it was “at least a couple.” Several of the referees reportedly had their contracts expired before they got new deals and they will likely be signed to more long-term deals in teh future.
In regards to the criticisms over the quality of AEW’s referees work refereeing during matches at recent pay-per-view events, it was reported that it is currently not known why AEW referees have been blatantly manipulating match spots and finishes, including pushing wrestler’s shoulders up or pushing them down to the mat. Those spoken to reportedly stated that this practice is currently expected to continue going forward.
Jimmy Jacobs AEW Departure Update
As noted before, AEW creative writer Jimmy Jacobs recently departed from the company.
Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that his sources confirmed that the reason for Jacobs’ departure was due to him getting burned out from the travel and work schedule. Meltzer reported that Jacobs’ work performance in the company played no role in his departure nor was it a situation of AEW officials wanting to move on without him.
Meltzer reported that Jacobs would fly in from Michigan to wherever AEW was holding shows on Wednesdays and Saturdays and the current belief is that he worked more actual dates on the road than anyone else besides Tony Khan.
One source close to Jacobs stated that there is always a possibility he may return to AEW in the future.
In regards to Jacobs’ actual duities in AEW, Meltzer reported that Jacobs was not an official writer for AEW’s creative team and instead his role was doing administrative work for the creative team. Jacobs reportedly had been Khan’s right hand man in the company and he did give some creative input to Khan and did contribute to creative ideas at times.
In regards to Jacobs’ well-being, Meltzer reported that one person close to Jacobs stated that he is currently doing well.
