Daniel Garcia Comments on His Decision to Stay in AEW & Feeling Surrounded By People He Wants “To Go To Battle With” in AEW

As noted before, Daniel Garcia made his surprise return to AEW earlier this month and announced that he had recently signed a new contract with the company.

Yahoo Sports’ Uncrowned held a recent interview with Garcia. One of the topics discussed included Garcia’s thoughts about his recent decision to sign a new deal to stay in AEW.

“I feel like I’m a conqueror. But if you look at the facts, I’ve never been in the main event of a pay-per-view. I’ve never won a title. I haven’t solidified myself as a top guy in the company.”

Garcia also gave his thoughts about the uncertainty he had for the future of his wrestling career that spanned from this past summer into this fall period and how looking around at the stars around him in AEW made him see people that he wants to be in the trenches with in the company.

“When I see [Konosuke] Takeshita getting a shot for the International title, that gets me excited. Private Party wrestling for the Tag Titles, that gets me excited. Whenever Top Flight has a big match on ‘Dynamite,’ that gets me hyped. I love being involved [with the young talent]. I love talking about ideas. I love talking about wrestling theory. I love getting and receiving advice. The young guys in AEW, I think we’re powerful. I think that we have the best young roster on the planet.

I remember [weeks ago] I was sitting at the monitor, and it was me, [Will] Ospreay, Swerve, Mercedes Moné. I was just looking around and I’m like, ‘Man, everybody’s watching the monitor. Everybody’s hyping up whatever is on TV right now. These are the people that I want to be [at] war with.’ It’s just the trust that I have with people at AEW. I look around to the left and to the right of me, and I feel like I’m surrounded by people that I want to go to battle with.”

Garcia also gave his thoughts about a big reason for his decision to stay in AEW was the ability they give for him to work in the indies and also keeping the door open for his dream goal of working in New Japan Pro Wrestling.

“A big part of the reason why I love AEW is that we can go do other things. I can go do indies if I want. We have those relationships with New Japan Pro Wrestling, CMLL, to where I can still get experience other places. I feel like New Japan Pro Wrestling was always my dream when I first started being a wrestler. That’s something I always wanted to accomplish. I wouldn’t feel full in my wrestling career until I get to have a little stint there. I feel like keeping those doors open [was] very important to me.”

AEW News & Notes

This past Sunday’s NFL game between the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania featured Britt Baker among those in attendance.

Streaming service Shudder recently announced that a new wrestling-themed horror film staring Chris Jericho titled Dark Match is currently scheduled to be released on January 31, 2025 on their service.

As noted before, Ricky Starks has been out of action for AEW since this past March due to a head-injury scare incident and AEW officials not having any current creative plans for his return. Fightful Select’s Sean Ross Sapp reported in a recent Q&A article that his sources stated that Starks’ contract with AEW is currently not set to expire any time soon.

Fightful Select’s Sean Ross Sapp also reported in a recent Q&A article that his sources stated that Jon Moxley’s contract with AEW is currently not set to expire until 2027 and possibly at the end of that year.

In a recent interview with Kayfabe Friends, Sting gave his thoughts about if he misses wrestling and being in front of a wrestling crowd since his retirement at this past March’s AEW Revolution 2024 event. Sting stated “Anyone who would say that they would not miss that is a liar, so of course I’ll miss that. But I’m never gonna come back to wrestle again. I know that. I did retire with WWE, but I also said the only thing that’s for sure about Sting is nothing’s for sure. This is just ‘see you later,’ basically. I did leave it open-ended pretty much, I didn’t really want to retire at that time. It was kind of like a mutual deal that I did with WWE at the time. Vince [McMahon] wanted me to retire under his umbrella, and at the time, I was okay with that. It was five-plus years that I was retired, but I came back because like I said in my little speech there, I got that phone call from Tony Khan and Cody Rhodes, ‘Want to come back and play one more time?’ So I did, and the rest is history.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)

In a recent episode of The Hawk’s Nest podcast, co-host Lance Archer gave his thoughts about his recent pairing with Brian Cage in AEW. Archer stated “I think it’s a good combination. It’s a combination that we’ve tried to have happen a few different times. We’ve fought each other on the independent scene, we’ve never actually fought each other in AEW. We’ve called each other out at different times. But I think you’ve got The Machine, you’ve got The Monster, you throw us together, who knows what the hell’s gonna happen?” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)
