Backstage Update on Bryan Danielson’s AEW World Title Victory at AEW All In 2024

As noted before, Sunday’s AEW All In 2024 event at Wembley Stadium in London, England featured Bryan Danielson defeating Swerve Strickland to become the new AEW World Champion. This match was notable for the stipulation of Danielson putting his wrestling career on the line.

Fightful Select reported that their sources stated that Danielson was adamant about not holding any championship in AEW but was coaxed by AEW CEO Tony Khan to win the AEW World title. Those spoken to reportedly stated that Khan wanted the final shot of All In 2024 to be Danielson holding the AEW World title and celebrating with it, so much so that there were jokes within the company of them doing a “reverse Montreal Screwjob” to make it happen.

It was reported that the rumored Will Ospreay vs. Swerve Strickland match for the AEW World title was something that was never actually planned for All In 2024. AEW officials reportedly had penciled in the Danielson vs. Strickland match to be the main event of All In 2024 as far back as this past April. It was reported that the current belief backstage is that Ospreay will have the opportunity to main event an AEW event at Wembley Stadium in the future.

Nigel McGuinness Comments on His In-Ring Return at AEW All In 2024

Sunday’s AEW All In 2024 event at Wembley Stadium also featured AEW commentator Nigel McGuinness making his surprise in-ring return. McGuinness had competed as one of the surprise entrants for the Casino Gauntlet match on the show.

Following the show, AEW held a digital exclusive backstage interview with McGuinness discussing his thoughts about getting to make an in-ring return at Wembley Stadium and competing in his first match since 2011.

“I did then. Not now. What you saw tonight was a long time coming. It had been 13 years since I was in the ring and 32 years since I was in this stadium and I first had that dream and epiphany that I was going to somehow become a professional wrestler. There was a good portion of life, after I retired 13 years ago, where I had to put that to bed. You get some things and you have to look at the positives. When I first found out that we were coming to Wembley and that was a possibility….what you saw tonight was only a short part of it. It’s been a year and a half that I’ve been thinking about that moment of walking out in front of my home crowd. It was surreal. I can’t believe it really happened. Show is over now. I shot my shot, it didn’t pay off, but I will take that memory for the rest of my life. You never know how life is going to work out. If anything it proves that there is always hope.”

Ricochet Dynamite Debut Match & Bryan Danielson Segment Announced for This Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite Show

AEW recently announced one new match and one new segment for the card of this week’s AEW Dynamite show on August 28th at the State Farm Center in Champaign, Illinois.

In regards to the new match, this was announced to be a singles match of Ricochet vs. Kyle Fletcher.

This match was setup following AEW releasing a digital exclusive video featuring Don Callis and Kyle Fletcher calling out Ricochet for a match between him and Fletcher at this Wednesday’s Dynamite show.

In regards to the new segment, this was announced to be a promo segment featuring new AEW World Champion Bryan Danielson.

This segment was setup following the All In 2024 post-show media scrum that featured Danielson announcing he will be making an appearance on this Wednesday’s Dynamite show to give an announcement about his future as AEW World Champion.
