AEW Reportedly Planning for Darby Allin to Get AEW World Title Run

AEW reportedly recently has held talks regarding plans for Darby Allin to win the AEW World Championship, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s early release issue that his sources stated that AEW officials have recently held talks regarding Allin getting a run as AEW World Champion within the near future.

Meltzer reported that these talks have been serious in terms of plans but it is currently not known when Allin would be expected to win the title. Meltzer speculated that should Jack Perry defeat Allin to retain his TNT title at All In 2024, then Allin could potentially win the AEW World title at this September’s Dynamite Grand Slam 2024 show at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

AEW News & Notes

As noted before, MJF revealed at this past May’s Double or Nothing 2024 event that he recently signed a new contract with AEW. In a recent interview with WrestleTalk, MJF gave his thoughts about him winning the “Bidding War of 2024.” MJF stated “I won. I’m fucking rich. It’s fucking crazy. You don’t understand. I have so much money. It’s hilarious. The whole locker room fucking hates me because they all know how much I’m making and they are not…it’s peanuts in comparison. I’m only 28. You have guys walking around in their 40s who have given their body to this industry. They’re dying, practically, and they don’t make a fraction of what I make. It’s fucking great. I got the bag. It’s sick. Tony is a fucking mark. My God. Showed me the number. Phew. Signed fast. Fast. Yes, I won.” MJF also gave his thoughts about if he had any contract talks with WWE for a potential deal with them. MJF stated “I can’t answer that for legal reasons because if I did have conversations with WWE, that would be considered what?” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)

In a recent interview with Sappenin’ Podcast with Sean Smith, Bryan Danielson gave his thoughts about how he never tried to bring “Final Countdown” with him for his AEW debut. Danielson stated “That’s not even a true thing. I wasn’t trying to bring anything in. The music that I come out to now, I wanted something different from my WWE stuff, but if you heard the first part would be reminiscent of that. My friend Elliott (Taylor), he produces a lot of great music. He put that together for me and turned it around within a week. What I really wanted, and it’s never truly caught on, I got it from an English football chant. I did it in Ring of Honor and it caught on and people liked it, but I think it’s hard in bigger arenas. ‘You’re gonna get your fucking head kicked in.’ I wanted that kind of beat in my entrance music, and Elliott put it in, but it hasn’t really caught on in the United States.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)

In a recent interview with Barstool Rasslin’ podcast, AEW CEO Tony Khan gave his thoughts about Britt Baker’s recent return from suspension to AEW. Khan stated “Britt Baker has been on the show just this week. I think Britt Baker is fantastic and it’s been so great having Dr. Britt Baker DMD back in AEW and she’s chasing the CEO. I think at AEW All In coming up this Sunday the DMD vs. the CEO for the TBS title at AEW All In at Wembley, it’s going to be a fantastic match. To me, Mercedes vs. Britt Baker is one of those dream matches that I’ve wanted to see for a long time before they worked in the same company. It’s one of those matches that you never thought you’d get to see and it’s happening at Wembley Stadium this Sunday. It’s going to be a great, great match and it’s been a great rivalry that’s unfolded on AEW television.” (Transcript h/t: F4WOnline.com)

In a recent interview with Daily Star, Chris Jericho gave his thoughts about his potential retirement plans and fans chanting “please retire” to him at shows. Jericho stated “Sting at 64 retired and everybody is different. To me, when the ‘please retire’ chants were going, I was laughing because I have zero intentions of that. I’ve got a six pack, I can do a moonsault, and I know exactly what I’m doing in the ring. I know how to write storylines. I like the company I work for. I like my boss. I like the guys and girls in the company. Why would I want to retire? What’s the point because someone told me to? Fuck off. I remember the (Rolling) Stones in ’89, when they did the Steel Wheels Tour, they were calling it the Steel Wheelchair Tour. ‘The Stones are too old. The Stones should retire.’ I just saw The Stones two months ago and they were amazing. They didn’t care. You retire when you know it’s time and you know it’s right. It’s not the right time right now. Until that moment where I feel, ‘This needs to stop,’ I have no intentions (of retiring). There is no time limit. It could be this week. It could be five years from now. I don’t know. I just know that as of this moment, I’m having a great time. I love going to work. I love contributing. There is no reason to stop doing that.

In a recent interview with the Busted Open Radio podcast, Mariah May gave her thoughts about her upcoming match against “Timeless” Toni Storm at Wembley Stadium. May stated “Going to Wembley Stadium is crazy to me. I remember going as a kid, and I never thought I’d perform at Wembley Stadium because we hadn’t had wrestling there for so long until AEW recently went to Wembley and kind of brought that into reality because it wasn’t really a realistic dream to have. But as for Toni Storm, of course I did always have that plan. At first, I’m not gonna lie, I was just kind of having fun and playing with her, and then when Tony Khan announced that the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament winner would get a match at Wembley, it kind of felt like the perfect stage to do this, given that I’m from the UK. It’s the biggest crowd that we get, and it’s the perfect place for Toni Storm to die.” May also gave her thoughts about if she has any remorse over her betrayal of Storm. May stated “I would be nothing without Toni Storm. She made me everything I am today. She gave me everything she had, her clothes, her knowledge, her time, and she made me who I am. She created this monster, and she created her own downfall. This entirely her fault. Everybody saw it coming, everybody told her it was going to happen. Even fans saw it coming, she didn’t listen, and now, she has to face me in my hometown, and she’s going to die.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)
