I’m busting my ass to get back, if I can steal what John [Cena] was talking about, for the fans. Whether you hate me or love me, I’m coming back to enjoy all these moments that were robbed from me when I got injured. Shit happens. It’s a contact sport. It stinks. I don’t want to burn myself out, especially now, this is the biggest opportunity and I’ve essentially worked my whole life for this. • In a recent episode of the Grilling JR podcast, co-host Jim Ross gave his thoughts about how he believes pay-per-view events should be three hours long as a maximum. Ross stated “Somebody asked me that question on Sunday because the discussion was, are we serving too much barbecue? It’s hard for me to even equate that answer because I believe that…it’s a tough question. I believe that a pay-per-view should be three hours. Plenty of time. If you can’t conduct your business in three hours, you need to reevaluate your plan. At least, that’s my take on it. Those four and five-hour pay-per-views are daunting, to say the least. Somebody said, ‘Well, when you guys were down at WCW back in the day, how long were your pay-per-views?’ I said, ‘They were two hours and 50 minutes long.’ That’s a fact. So I think somewhere more in the two-hour and 50-minute range is better, or just [say] three hours, for simplicity’s sake, is more my wheelhouse. Now that I’m getting older, my attention span has been affected, so I think three hours is a nice starting point for a pay-per-view. That’s just me. You first gotta cater to your audience, and I think when you get past three, you’re gambling, and I don’t know if that’s a smart thing to do, gamble with your audience’s attention span. Because no matter what we say, the heavy sh*t is at the end. It’s called a main event, and I think that’s something that’s very important. You gotta cater to that audience, make sure they’re covered, make sure they like the order, and it’s just hard. It’s hard to figure that out, but I think somewhere in that three-hour range would be my preference.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)

Tagaki stated “6.30 Forbidden Door. Owen Hart Cup 1st round Shingo Takagi vs. Bryan Danielson. First singles match (between us) in 14 years since 2010. Last time I lost by tap out. It was an emotional match. In June 2006, a year and eight months after my debut, I went to the U.S. to train. It was about a year of training, but as a young boy, I didn’t have a chance to fight against Bryan and Samoa Joe, who were the top fighters at the time. The rebellious spirit of that time still exists today. I also put my Yamato Spirit (Yamato-damashii) which is unique to Japanese people, into action. The result was a referee stoppage, but I’m glad they stopped me because I had the G1 tournament coming up (laughs). I asked Bryan for a rematch in the ring, but who knows what will happen in the future? He understood the Japanese style and I felt he had a little special feeling for me (maybe). He’s got a lot of name recognition and a lot of achievements, but as long as we’re in the same ring, I don’t want to lose. He’s declared that he’s going to semi-retire next year, but I’m not going to let him run away with the win. There’s still a lot of work to do in Japan and in the U.S. I am still a novice. I will continue to work hard…Thank you. Gassho. I hope to play with this person (picture of Takagi & Samoa Joe) in the near future.” (English translation via PostWrestling.com)

This event was notable for Chris Jericho making a surprise appearance and issuing a challenge to Mistico for a match at a future event.
  • In a recent episode of the Talk Is Jericho podcast, host Chris Jericho gave his thoughts about his recent return appearance to CMLL. Jericho stated “It was a huge surprise this week when Corazon de Leon returned to Arena Mexico. I was in Mexico from ’92-’95, and the last time I wrestled in Arena Mexico was September 15, 1995. It was really cool to go back to Mexico City, and how did that come about? We started working with CMLL in AEW, and when I was going through the transition between the whole Kenny Omega and the Golden Jets, and then Kenny got sick, and the. Sammy [Guevara] and I were a kind of a team and that really didn’t work out well, and then Sammy got suspended, so I was doing some Corazon de Leon, working with some luchadors. I had a match with Titan, I had a match with Atlantis Jr., and it started to occur to me that with this new relationship with CMLL and AEW, maybe it’d be cool to go back to Arena Mexico and have a match. In the meantime, the BCC and Matt Sydal, filling in for an injured Wheeler Yuta, went to Arena Mexico and had a match and just had the best time. The crowd was so amazing and everyone was super excited, and it just really kind of opened up my mind completely that it was time to make me return to Arena Mexico, kind of a full circle. I’ve wrestled in Mexico since then, a few times with WWE. But it was never in Arena Mexico, which is owned by the Lutteroth family, and it’s the oldest wrestling company in the world. It’s one of the oldest arenas in the world, and they call it the cathedral of Lucha Libre. So I just started talking to Rocky Romero and letting him know that I was open to going back. Rocky is kind of a liaison for AEW to both CMLL and to New Japan Pro-Wrestling, so he’s very valuable. We just started discussing what could I do? What would be a great match to have, and who would be there that I’d do something good with? We kind of decided that Mistico would be the perfect kind of almost a dream match of Chris Jericho, Corazon de Leon [and] Mistico. So we did some negotiations with them, and they came back with the original idea of doing a tag team match, which I wasn’t feeling. Then we kind of went to back to the drawing board and again kind of came up with the idea to go a singles match. That’s what we decided to do. Then you start the negotiations, and it’s always great to get for something that you’re doing, but this is not so much for the money as it is just for me to return to this place where I pretty much cut my teeth.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)
  • In the same episode, Chris Jericho also gave his thoughts about the reaction from CMLL fans when he made his surprise return appearance in CMLL. Jericho stated “The thing I liked the best was just going there on a normal Friday night, they had about 12,000 people there, which is amazing. The fans are just happy, they’re just excited. They cheer for the good guys and they boo the bad guys, and they’re not chanting ‘You fucked up’ and they’re not worried about how many tickets were sold or what the television ratings were, giving out star ratings whatever it was. They were just enjoying the show. It was such a refresher for me, and I really am glad that I did it. Once again, it kind of is something from the Chris Jericho trope. You’ve got people that are chanting ‘Please retire,’ which is great [laughs], and here I got I Mexico, and it’s the number one thing in wrestling. It was on the cover of all the magazines and I think there’s was probably 15 articles on all the different wrestling sites and sports sites that Jericho had returned. So it’s a big deal, it was gonna be a great time to go there, and it gave me more momentum and excitement to come back. It’s just good to know that this worldwide history that I have, I can go back to it at any time, and now is the perfect time to go back to it. So muchas gracias, Arena Mexico, and we will see everybody there very soon.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)

I’m a really big fan of that. Just having the opportunity to explore different layers of our characters in wrestling like I’ve done in the past with movies. It felt very exhilarating. I think we found out at the same time, what had been the plan all along. For me, it gives MLW the vibe of Tim Burton meets [Quentin] Tarantino. It’s a dream come true for me. It has been an honor to work with Cesar. You don’t always get people that talented and can just create on the spot. It feels like my second run with MLW has been this upgraded version where we have multi-layers of our personalities and we’re able to establish an emotional connection with what fans come up with in their head.
