AEW: Backstage Update on AEW’s Plans for MJF & Will Ospreay Feud, Mercedes Mone Segment Set for 7/31 Dynamite, Goldberg on Tony Khan Being the “Male Dixie Carter”

Backstage Update on AEW’s Plans for MJF & Will Ospreay Feud

In recent weeks, MJF has been feuding with Will Ospreay in AEW that has led to MJF defeating Ospreay to win the AEW International Championship on the Dynamite 250 show and a rematch for the title, renamed to the AEW American Championship, at this August’s All In 2024 event.

Fightful Select reported that their sources stated that the MJF and Ospreay feud had been something that was planned by AEW officials going back many months. This reportedly was the reason why Ospreay challenged Swerve Strickland for the AEW World Championship at this past June’s Forbidden Door 2024 event to remove any question of why Ospreay was not competing for the top prize at All In 2024. Ospreay reportedly had wanted to help elevate Swerve’s title reign as another reason for the decision.

AEW officials reportedly had planned for this feud to take place well before MJF’s return to the company but it is currently not known how long the plans for MJF’s near hour long match with Ospreay for the AEW International title was in the works. It was reported that those spoken to stated that the MJF and Ospreay feud was planned to carry through the summer to All In 2024. MJF renaming the title to the AEW American title reportedly was meant to be a temporary way for him to gain extra heat with the big idea being to elevate the title in the long run.

Bill Goldberg Comments on Tony Khan Being the “Male Version of Dixie Carter”

A recent episode of the Insight with Chris Van Vliet podcast featured WWE Hall of Famer Bill Goldberg as the guest. One of the topics discussed included Goldberg’s thoughts about his past talks with AEW CEO Tony Khan and his belief that Khan is the “male version” of former TNA/Impact Wrestling owner Dixie Carter.

“I just think we (Goldberg & Tony Khan) have a different perspective on it, I think. I don’t know. I mean, it’s hard for me to really pass judgment on their production because I don’t watch it. I see clips of it, and it’s hard to give a rational breakdown of how they are if I don’t really watch it, so, I don’t really know. He reminds me of Dixie Carter. But a male version, and I don’t know if it’s a good or a bad thing. But he reminds me of that scenario and it’s just a different feel… It’s just different.

No. I don’t think I was ever close to making a deal with him. I think it was much more a realistic transition when Sting was involved. I reached out to Sting because I wanted to be a part. I thought he and I could do a farewell thing at some point together but, it wasn’t about me. It was about Sting… I could never overshadow anything that he does. But I don’t want to convolute the water. It would have been a nice crescendo but, it wasn’t about me. So the timing was kind of off on that.”
