Update on AEW Resolving CMLL/AAA Talent Restriction Issues for Forbidden Door 2024

As noted before, AEW recently resolved the issues between Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre and Lucha Libre AAA regarding the status of CMLL and AAA talent for this month’s AEW and NJPW’s Forbidden Door 2024 event.

Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that his sources stated that CMLL officials recently updated their policy in regards to their restriction of not allowing their talents to work on the same show as AAA talents for shows held by their partners. This policy primarily impacted Mexican-based talent and not international talent who also worked for AAA. Meltzer reported that CMLL’s new updated policy is that they will allow talent who have not worked for AAA of late but are Mexican born to work on the same shows that CMLL talent are booked for. Meltzer also reported that the current belief is that this new policy includes AEW’s Forbidden Door events going forward.

In regards to Rey Fenix working at this past Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite show that also featured CMLL talent competing in a separate match, Meltzer reported that Fenix was allowed to work at the show due to CMLL officials being fine since Fenix has not wrestled for AAA in a long while.

In regards to RUSH’s status, RUSH reportedly is currently in a different situation which is why he was able to be on the show but did not wrestle. Meltzer reported that CMLL officials have been okay at times with allowing Mexican-based talent doing angles on shows that also feature CMLL talents but not performing in matches. CMLL officials have also been okay with allowing Mexican-based talent appearing in the same arena but not on the same televised show as CMLL talent. Meltzer reported that the situation with RUSH likely will be resolved soon due to AEW officials currently have plans for a MJF vs. RUSH match to take place at Forbidden Door 2024.

In regards to Penta El Zero Miedo’s status, Meltzer reported that Penta’s current situation is unclear but AEW officials currently believe that they would be able to use him for their shows that also have CMLL talent booked for due to the last time he worked a televised show for AAA was this past November. Penta reportedly had worked at an AAA affiliated show this past February in Tijuana and had been originally advertised for another AAA affiliated show this past April but the current belief within AEW is that CMLL owner Salvador Lutteroth III would be okay with Penta working on the same AEW shows as CMLL talents.

In regards to Komander’s status, Meltzer reported that those spoken to confirmed that Komander would not be allowed to work on shows with CMLL talents due to him currently holding the AAA Cruiserweight Championship.

In regards to Bandido’s status, Meltzer reported that the current belief is that Bandido would be in the same category as Fenix in regards to being allowed to work on the same AEW shows as CMLL talents due to the lengthy amount of time that has past since his last televised show for AAA.
