More on AEW Dynamite Viewership for June 19th
The June 19th episode of AEW Dynamite saw AEW suffer a very large decline in overall viewership and a large decline in key demographic ratings, and a slight decline in key demographic rankings.
AEW drew 502,000 viewers and a 0.16 key demographic rating on TBS. AEW’s key demographic ranking for that night was 3rd place.
Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s special extended Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the main reasons for AEW’s declines this week was due to a combination of the large declines from their older key demographic viewership, which was down 41.9% compared to last week’s show, and the very weak lead-in programming Black Panther, which drew a 0.04 key demo rating on TBS. Meltzer reported that AEW’s usual lead-in program Big Bang Theory usually averages between a 0.13 to a 0.23 for its key demo rating. Meltzer reported that this issue also lead to the rare occasion where AEW generated a 243% increase in their key demo viewers tuning into the start of the show compared to the prior week’s increase that was only 45%. Meltzer also reported that the Juneteenth holiday also negatively affected Dynamite’s numbers to a degree as well due to TBS’s sister station TNT was also hit hard during Dynamite’s two hours being down 74% compared to the prior week. This reportedly offset the small gains from their younger key demographic viewership group, which was up 4.6% compared to last week’s show. Meltzer also reported that AEW’s overall viewership was the third lowest ever for a Dynamite show, the lowest ever for a Dynamite show in its regular Wednesday night timeslot, and the lowest ever key demographic rating for a Dynamite show in series history. In a follow-up report, Meltzer reported in Friday’s Daily Update that the Lamar Kendrick concert on Amazon would have also been another factor due to the concert went head-to-head against Dynamite and drew the largest ever viewership for a musical show in Amazon history.
In terms of notable head-to-head competition, the 2024 Olympic Trials drew 3,488,000 viewers on NBC, the 2024 College World Series game of Texas A&M vs. Florida drew 1,791,000 viewers on ESPN, the MLB game of Boston Red Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays drew 192,000 viewers on MLB Network, the WNBA game of Washington Mystics vs. Indiana Fever drew 460,000 viewers on NBA TV, Expedition Unknown drew 1,130,000 viewers on Discovery Channel, Top Chef drew 666,000 viewers on Bravo, and Sistas Series drew 749,000 viewers on BET.
