Kelly’s profile removal and potential release from AEW might have been related to a recent online incident involving Kelly this past weekend. Kelly claimed that he was libeled by fellow AEW and Ring of Honor commentator Ian Riccaboni.
In response to a fan question, Kelly claimed that he has been pushed aside and described his current position in AEW as being “benched” for the reason why he has not been utilized more in the company. Kelly also claimed that there was nobody better than him in AEW’s commentary team.
But the idea of what I bring to the table is lost there because Ian libeled me. So I sit on the bench, valued by my peers, waiting to get my number called.

I keep asking why but get pushed aside. Itβs ok because there is no one better than me. Ask the ones that know and theyβll tell you.

For some reference, Riccaboni was the person who had suggested to AEW officials for them to hire Kelly for their AEW Collision series due to him not being able to work regularly on Saturdays due to family and other non-wrestling-related issues.
PWInsider’s Mike Johnson reported that his sources stated that Kelly was not in attendance backstage at this past Sunday’s AEW Revolution 2024 event in Greensboro, North Carolina. Johnson reported that there have been some who believe Kelly has been released by AEW but this is something he has yet to confirm from his sources.
Johnson also reported that Kelly’s situation in AEW likely will become clearer by the end of Thursday due to AEW is holding Collision tapings tonight in Duluth, Georgia for this Saturday’s episode.
Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp reported that his source stated that Kelly did not work at tonight’s Collision tapings and instead it was just Tony Schiavone and Nigel McGuinness working in the commentary table.

Kelly has been with AEW and working primarily as a commentator for their AEW Collision brand since June of 2023.
