AEW: Mercedes Mone on Reason for Her Joining AEW, Jim Ross on 2024 Being His Last Year of Career, Tag Title Tournament Bracketology Set for Fri Rampage Show

Mercedes Mone Comments on AEW’s Women’s Division Being Reason for Her Joining AEW

As noted before, Mercedes Mone made her official debut for AEW at Wednesday’s AEW Big Business show at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.

Sports Illustrated held a recent interview with Mone. One of the topics discussed included Mone’s thoughts about her decision to sign with AEW.

“I want to be here, I need to be here, and it’s because of the women’s division. The women here laid the foundation. They’re the reason I want to be in AEW. We’re going to make so much magic here …

This is a global revolution. That’s why I’m here. You don’t think I can take this around the globe? Well then, let me show you I can. My heart is here. My dreams are here. I love wrestling. I’m a leader, and I’m going to lead.”

Mone also gave her thoughts about her ankle injury she suffered in May of 2023 and being told by doctors that it could be a career ending injury.

“I got an MRI in May, and the surgeon told me, ‘This is career-ending.’ That was the biggest shock in my whole life. I’d never really been injured like this before. My worst injury before this was from Hell in a Cell in 2019, when my pelvis was out of place for eight months. This was so much more painful. People thought it was just a broken ankle. I was non-weight bearing for three months. It was a fight every day.

It was devastating when I was told I was never going to come back. But I always knew I would be back, and I told that to my surgeon. Now I’m healthy and my surgeon is calling his mentor saying, ‘Look at what happened here, it’s incredible.’ I don’t like being told no. I always believed I would be back, and now it’s true.”

Mone also gave her thoughts about her official debut appearance in AEW at Wednesday’s Big Business show.

“All day, I was so full of energy. Ten minutes before the show, I was in gorilla. I could feel the energy in the building. When my music hit, I felt the energy and I knew I was home.

And I’ve honestly been thinking about what I wanted to say for the past year. When I finally signed with AEW, I put even more thought into it. I decided to speak from my heart. That’s what I did, and the crowd made it so special for me. Everything started in Boston. I wouldn’t be ‘The CEO’ if it wasn’t for my time here.”

Jim Ross Comments on 2024 Being “Realistic to Say This Will Be My Last Year as an Announcer”

As noted before, Jim Ross announced earlier this month that he recently signed a new contract with AEW to remain in the company for at least one more year.

In a recent episode of the Grillin JR podcast, co-host Ross stated that he currently believes that 2024 will realistically be the last year of his commentary career.

“I think so. It’s realistic to think that. I’m 72 years old, I feel good, I get healthier every day, which is great, but I have to think realistically this could be my last year and more than likely will. It’s to be determined. That’s between me, my health, and Tony Khan. Right now it’s a good plan because I’m essentially working, as I understand, pay-per-views only. That’s where you’ll find me, as the plan goes, as we speak. As we know, in pro wrestling, things change and could be different, but I don’t think so with this occasion. I think it’s what I’ll be doing, and that’s fine with me. I get to go to big shows, call big matches on big shows. Tony Khan has a good feel for what he’d like me to do, and my skill set. Right now, my situation is, I’m going to be married to the pay-per-views. That’s good. Maybe it’ll help the buy rates a bit. Storytelling will be a little sounder and different.”
