I’m like, I’m not supposed to be in here. Why would I be in here right now? I’m not prepared for this. Also, who would I be to take a main event at WrestleMania spot away from somebody? So I got my ass out of there. Now I went back in because I thought to myself, wait a minute, am I just gonna be a coward? In a recent interview with Stratchery, Netflix CEO Greg Peters gave his thoughts about Netflix’s recent deal with WWE. Peters stated “We love this deal for a whole variety of reasons. One is that the one you mentioned, which we think that this is quite close to what we do. We think we are in the business of telling dramatic stories around sports. You’ve seen it with Drive to Survive or Break Point, Full Swing. We feel that’s a space that we’ve earned the right to play and an expectation to deliver value to consumers, and we feel like this is in that zone. We also love it, because as you mentioned, this is 52 weeks of entertainment. This is always on entertainment, sports entertainment, and it fits really well within our model. We think it’s synergistic with what we’re doing on ads, and we like it from that perspective. What we believe is that there’s a real opportunity for growing the fan base for this set of content globally. We think it’s been under-distributed, we think it’s been under-leveraged. There’s good signs that there’s fans out there, but we think we can grow that. We think about it as the inverse to Drive to Survive to F1. We could actually grow the international audience in a way that is material. We’ve organized the deal so that it’s a big long-term deal. In other words, there’s a little bit of risk insulation into the renting concerns that you mentioned before.” Peters also gave his thoughts about the option to opt out of the deal. Peters stated “Yeah. Again, I think it’s part of recognition that we brought a lot of value and potential value to it. We were able to negotiate reasonable optionality in that regard, which we like, because it gives us a little bit of room to learn and also to extend if we like where it’s going. And then, to your point about renting, we love sports. I mean, sports is some of the most compelling content out there, but in the same reason that it’s compelling, it’s also poorly substitutable, that means that you’re de-leveraged relative to the rights holder. There’s a spectrum of those things. I would say WWE is more towards the substitutable spectrum than, let’s say, NFL or NBA or things like that, but Friends is relatively non-substitutable as well. It probably sits somewhere in the same space.“
- Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that WWE officials spoken to stated that while they currently have not locked in the days of the week for their television shows following their recent new TV deals, they are currently working under the idea that SmackDown will remain on Fridays on USA Network. Those will be decisions largely made by the stations.”

This is a guy who’s been working his ass off out there on the indie scene, grinding. The thing is, sometimes we make mistakes, but when we atone for those mistakes, that’s when somebody just needs to give you a chance, and for me, someone gave me a chance and look what it’s done for me. Someone needs to give Jacob Fatu a chance and I’m going to be working in his corner as his advisor to get him all the way to that next level and over it if we possibly can. - In a recent interview with AEW, Matt Menard gave his thoughts about his continued partnership with Daniel Garcia. Menard stated “I come home two weeks ago, come home from collision, and I go to pick up my son. And I’m struggling, I can’t, it’s having a hard time, my wife looks at me. How is it, she says this, how is it that you leave to commentate wrestling matches, you come home in worse shape than you would be had you wrestled the matches yourself? Why is it that you feel the need to protect Daniel Garcia like this? And as we were looking at my son, I said, don’t you wish that in 25 years, if Jack finds himself in an industry filled with dogs, alone, his back against the wall, that somebody is going to have his best interests at heart, that somebody’s going to protect him or do everything they can to protect him so he doesn’t feel so alone. And of course she agreed with that. Of course she didn’t want that. They didn’t want that for their son. But even deeper than that, you know, I made a promise. Daniel doesn’t know this. He’ll find out when he sees this. I made a promise to his mother. I made that exact promise to his mother. That no matter what happens, that I’d have his back. That I’d act with his best interests. at heart that I try to guide him and support him the best that I could so that he’d never be alone. She did a great job, she did a great job raising a young man, a single mother. I can’t imagine the burden of that and to watch your son blaze this path in professional wrestling. And to watch everything that he goes through, the bumps and the bruises, the pain and the heartbreak. To watch him overcome in the Continental Classic. Everybody saw the potential of Daniel Garcia from the second he walked through the door here in AEW. And everybody loves a guy on the way up, right, everybody? Everybody loves a kid who’s full of potential. Until he starts to realize it, until he starts to realize that potential, that’s when the knives come out. And I know this, right? I know this. I expected it. The second he beats Brody King, he gets attacked. And now we’re in this thing with House of Black. And FTR is at our side, at Daniel’s side. I don’t even know how we got here, honestly. But I look at this cage match, I look at this cage match on Saturday night and, I don’t know, man. I just don’t know. I just don’t know how I would keep that promise to his mother, you know.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)
- Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that one reason for AEW’s weak attendances for their shows in recent times is due to several changes they made in regards to ticket sales advances and walk-ups that have not been questionable at best. Meltzer reported that AEW previously would offer late ticket price changes in the form of “Buy One, Get One” free type offers or reduce prices for unsold seats to help boost late ticket sales. Meltzer reported that AEW has not done this for their recent shows and as a result this has led to their late sales being much weaker or smaller than before. Meltzer also reported that one Newsletter reader who contacted him about the ticket sales situation regarding AEW’s Feb. 28th Dynamite show in Huntsville, Alabama is that AEW is currently only listing “super expensive” tickets for sale for the reason why their advance sales have been weak. This person stated that had he not looked more into tickets for the event, he would have been under the belief that the show was sold out or nearing sold out status despite the opposite being true. This person also stated that AEW needs to do a better job communicating what tickets they currently have available for sale if they want to improve this situation.
- In regards to other likely causes for AEW’s weaker attendances for recent shows, Meltzer reported that some of this has to do with the recent transition change from Rafael Morffi to new COO Kosha Irby, who is now in charge of scheduling buildings for events and merchandise. Meltzer reported that this means that positive changes for this issue would not be noticeably right away and instead over time. One person within the wrestling industry spoken to reportedly stated that they believe another issue is due to AEW’s long night of tapings for their Saturday Collision shows due to them also taping lengthy ROH TV shows on the same nights and lack of advertising in regards to talents and matches ahead of time. This person reportedly stated “Strongly agree with a lot of the things brought up. Definitely advertising guys. I can’t tell you the amount of timed we’ve been doing customer service or just communicating with our clients and to make conversation you mention, `Oh hey AEW is coming to your area on X date, are you going?’ And the most common response is who is on the show? And naturally we have no idea because AEW has no idea themselves until days out. WWE will false advertise people but you know certain faces you can absolutely expect. They’re never going in to headline with JD and Dominik vs DIY. You will get to see the stars either on the TV portion or a dark match. With AEW… you could easily get a show with no Sting, no Bucks, no Kenny, no Page, no MJF, no FTR.” This person continued stating “I also firmly believe those Saturday tapings are being hurt by having all those ROH matches. You can say oh the fans can leave whenever they want but nobody wants to pay for a live event and leave while it’s still going on. It’s a psychological thing. And if they stay till the end enduring 13 pointless matches, there is no chance they are returning next time. It’s so off putting to most customers. You want people to leave your show on a high and excited to come back. That won’t happen if they are leaving mid-event and it certainly isn’t happening if they sat through four-and-a-half hours and you are sending them home with a Gringo Loco match.”

Ishiwaka stated that Fukuda kept turning down ideas he had for shows and the company and felt that AJPW’s partnership with Actwres Girlz promotion devalued the work that he and Suwama did in developing the Evolution Girls. Ishiwaka also stated that he was upset over the lack of communication by Fukada towards his issues and nor the videos that Fukada was doing.
