Update on Kazuchika Okada Leaving NJPW & Interest from Other Promotions
As noted before, New Japan Pro Wrestling announced this past Thursday that Kazuchika Okada will be leaving the company after his contract expires at the end of this January.
Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso reported that his sources within NJPW stated that Okada’s exit announcement was something that was not unexpected nor had it caught them off guard.
In regards to potential destinations, Barrasso reported that AEW is still teh frontrunner to sign Okada but WWE currently has interest under the belief that one of Okada’s goals is to wrestle at a WrestleMania event. Barrasso also reported that one of the big factors that could sway Okada’s decision is that AEW CEO Tony Khan can offer Okada being allowed to stay in Japan unlike WWE who would very likely require him to move to the United States as part of their terms for a deal.
Barrasso also reported that TNA Wrestling is a distant third in the bidding for Okada due to them not being able to outspend Khan who is currently willing to make him one of the highest paid performers in AEW. Barrasso also reported that TNA also lacks the allure of WWE if it were to come down to those two as choices.
