As noted before, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson recently confirmed that WWE had “locked in” plans at one point for him to face off against Roman Reigns at this past April’s WrestleMania 39 event. Johnson is currently rumored to face off against Reigns at next year’s WrestleMania 40 based on his availability for the event by that time.
Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that his sources provided several new details.
In regards to the recent rumors and reports that WWE will not do a The Rock vs. Reigns match at WrestleMania 40, Meltzer reported that those spoken to stated that this decision would be up to Johnson since it is unlikely that WWE would turn down an offer for him to work at next year’s event and in a match against Reigns.
Unlike with this year’s WrestleMania 39 event, WWE officials reportedly do not have this match scheduled in advance to take place at next year’s event. Meltzer reported that the reason is due to WWE officials are currently under the belief that Johnson will be busy with plenty of work once the Hollywood actors strike is over. Another reason reportedly is due to WWE officials reportedly currently do not have any expectations that Johnson will work at next year’s event since he had turned down their offer to wrestle at this past April’s WrestleMania 39 event.
In regards to WWE’s potential plans for a The Rock vs. Reigns match at WrestleMania 40, those spoken to reportedly stated that WWE officials currently do not have any plans for Johnson to return and defeat Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. Meltzer speculated that Johnson more likely would wrestle this match and then retire from in-ring wrestling afterwards.
