WWE NXT Notes: Becky Lynch Appears, Women’s Title Match Announced, New Matches for No Mercy, Global Heritage Invitational

Becky Lynch Makes Surprise Appearance, NXT Women’s Title Match Announced for Next Week’s Show

Tuesday’s WWE NXT show featured a NXT Women’s Championship match of Kiana James vs. Tiffany Stratton (c) that opened the show.

Following Stratton’s victory over James to retain her NXT Women’s title, Becky Lynch appeared on the giant screen interrupting Stratton’s post-match celebration. Lynch congratulated Stratton on her victory and stated that she has won almost everything in WWE except for one thing, which is the NXT Women’s Championship. Lynch also stated that she decided to show up in NXT in response to Stratton showing up at RAW and this past Saturday’s Payback 2023 event. Lynch then stated that Stratton will be putting her NXT Women’s title on the line and against her in the main event of next week’s show. This match was made official afterwards following an announcement by NXT commentator Vic Joseph.


One New Match & One Updated Match Announced for NXT No Mercy

Tuesday’s NXT show also featured one new match and one updated match officially announced for the card of NXT No Mercy, which takes place on September 30th in Bakersfield, California.

In regards to the new match, this was announced to be a NXT Championship match of Ilja Dragunov or Wes Lee vs. Carmelo Hayes (c).

This match was setup following an in-ring promo segment by Dragunov, Lee, and Hayes. After Dragunov defeated Oro Mensah on the show, Lee came out interrupting leading to a heated banter exchange over who is first in line for a shot at Carmelo Hayes’ NXT Championship. Hayes then came out and stated that after his talk with NXT head booker Shawn Michaels, he said there was no asterisk over his win against Dragunov and Lee took risks but he took advantage of it for his recent titles matches against them. Hayes also stated that Lee and Dargunov will compete in a #1 Contender’s match at next week’s NXT show and the winner will get to face him in a NXT Championship match at NXT No Mercy.

In regards to the new updated match, this was announced to be a NXT North American Championship match of Mustafa Ali vs. Dominik Mysterio (c).

This match was setup following Ali defeating Lee in a #1 Contender’s match with Mysterio as the special guest referee. The finish to this match involved Lee hitting a sitout powerbomb to Ali for a nearfall that led to Lee taking issue with Mysterio over his slow count. This led to Ali rolling up Lee while he was distracted for the fast count pinfall victory and earning a title shot against Mysterio at NXT No Mercy.

Two More NXT Global Heritage Invitational Tournament Matches, Updated Standings

Tuesday’s NXT show also featured two group matches for NXT’s ongoing Global Heritage Invitational Tournament.

The first match involved Nathan Frazer defeating Duke Hudson in a Group B match.

The finish to this match involved Hudson attempting a Razor’s Edge to Frazer only for Frazer to counter with a hurricanrana to send Hudson into the turnbuckles. Frazer then hit a Phoenix Splash for the pinfall victory and earned two points as a result.

The second match involved Butch and Axiom going to a 12-minute time limit draw for their Group A match. As a result, both Butch and Axiom were awarded one point each for the draw decision.
