Prior to his firing, Punk was open to the idea of potentially returning to WWE following his first suspension from the infamous All Out 2022 backstage fight. Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that his sources stated that Punk did not make a serious pitch to WWE officials over a potential WrestleMania 39 opponent if he were to return to the company. Punk reportedly giving out the name of Kevin Owens was more of just an example of him being willing to work with anyone. Meltzer reported that WWE officials were not interested in Punk’s pitch nor idea for a potential return but also legally could not due to AEW had not released Punk from his contract at the time. Meltzer reported that any decision regarding a potential WWE return for Punk would come down to if Vince McMahon feels that the financial benefits would greatly outweight the risks. Meltzer speculated that if WWE were to decide to not bring back Punk, there could be a chance however small it would be of a potential return to AEW for Punk in the future.

Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that WWE benefited greatly from sports competition from ESPN being around in 20% fewer homes than usual due to Disney’s current carriage fees dispute with Charter Communications, which owns the Spectrum cable television provider. This dispute reportedly has led to Spectrum no longer airing any ESPN-related networks on their service. Meltzer reported that this is currently a big advantage for WWE’s RAW due to this will weaken Monday Night Football’s ratings to a degree at least for the start of this year’s NFL season. Meltzer speculated that at most, RAW would potentially get around a 2% boost in ratings for shows during the duration of the dispute.

I’m working on my legacy every day and every single week. Sometimes, you get lost in the shuffle or the travel and the busy schedule, that at least me personally, I kind of lose sight of what the bigger picture is. And what I’m trying to do. I wanna make sure that I’m cementing my legacy, and that goes for Damage CTRL too. IYO, I want her to have the best title run of all-time. Dakota should get a title shot. All of us end up at WrestleMania in a Triple Threat for the title as best friends? I’m fine with that too. Let’s put that in the universe (she laughed). I just want to continue to cement a legacy and be able to still inspire the fans and have a connection that I’ve had since day one. And watch us all grow every day.“

I can’t think of a better time and a better place than WrestleDream, October 1, the whole event is in honor of Antoni Inoki. I can’t think of a better way to honor Inoki than to find out who the best technical wrestler in the world really is. Bryan, you’re one of the greatest wrestlers that has ever lived, but I surpassed you yonks ago, dickhead. Yonks ago. Bryan, in 2008, you helped kickstart my career. I have some bad news for you, you don’t have another year left. 2008, you jumpstarted Zack Sabre Jr. In 2023, Bryan, I end your career. See you in Seattle, dickhead.” (Transcript h/t: Fightful.com)

I have made quite a few mistakes along the way. But I also have learned some valuable lessons, too. I am incredibly grateful for it all. In December, l’ll be 30 years old with 10 years of wrestling under my belt. The fun part is: I haven’t nearly touched the surface of what I am capable of. knew my journey in pro wrestling would not be an easy one, regardless of my talents. The best part of it all is that I showed people like me that anything is possible when you’re working your ass off for it. It may not come easy, but it WILL come. Sometimes you have to fall all the way down to reignite that fiery passion again. So, now what? I’m the Concrete Rose, Sonny Kiss and I am a free agent. I am SO ready for this next chapter. Let’s continue to break those barriers down, shatter those glass ceilings, and make Sh!t happen!§ Where to next? XO, Sonny.“

- As noted before, AEW terminated CM Punk’s contract with cause earlier this month following their investigation into his backstage incident with Jack Perry at their All In event this past August. Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that his sources stated that the current belief is that Punk was actually under two contracts with AEW, one for talent and one for employee. The reason for this reportedly is due to the belief that this was AEW’s way to cover full insurance for him but this has been something that has yet to be confirmed by AEW officials. Meltzer reported that besides Andrade El Idolo and FTR, at least three other talents were very upset over Punk’s firing with Brody King believed to be one of them. In regards to the backstage mood after Punk’s firing, many within AEW reportedly had felt that a dark cloud had been lifted over their heads and how much fun they had with recent shows.
- In regards to Punk’s attempts at trying to get a meeting done with The Elite, Meltzer reported that several people within AEW had tried to get a meeting scheduled between Punk and the Young Bucks to resolve their issues but this was something that never actually asked due to the belief that the Young Bucks would turn down the request. AEW officials had looked into setting up a meeting on August 23rd in Duluth, Georgia since that was when they had tapings for both Dynamite and Collision on the same night. Meltzer reported that AEW officials had recently informed the Young Bucks of a legal letter that had been sent to the company from Punk’s camp claiming that the Young Bucks violated an agreement in place to not talk negatively in publicly about the other. This reportedly revolved around a skit in a recent episode of Being The Elite involving a storyline that had started years earlier and focused on Matt Jackson screwing up endorsement deal for the Elite only to be brought back and screwed up another deal leaving them broke in the process and being furious over the idea of never being able to retire or leave wrestling and demanded Jackson to give a public apology. Meltzer reported that while Punk’s name was never brought up in the skit, he had felt that this was a dig at him resulting in a legal letter being sent. Meltzer also reported that the combination of them receiving a legal letter and Punk’s backstage incident with Ryan Nemeth led to the Young Bucks turning down the idea of a potential meeting with Punk. Meltzer reported that another reason was due to the view of Punk had kept resetting the clock on the idea of time healing all wounds over his constant backstage issues. One person spoken to close to the Young Bucks stated that the Bucks had said to others that if Punk was able to go six months without any issues, then they would be willing to sit down with him for a meeting.
- Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that besides CM Punk storming into AEW CEO Tony Khan’s office and allegedly lunging at Khan over Jack Perry’s on-camera comments, there was another big incident backstage between Punk and Khan backstage at AEW’s All In event last month. In regards to total attendance, AEW CEO Tony Khan had stated during the All In post-show media scrum that they had around 90,000 people in the building while WrestleTix reported that their final count was 83,131. Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the reason for the big discrepancy in numbers is due to WrestleTix’s number is only an estimate based on tickets distributed and those who had shown up to the event and did not count tickets sold or distributed for suites which would put the total number several thousands higher. Meltzer reported that when including suites, he estimated that AEW’s total attendance would have been around 85,371 while Khan’s higher attendance number would have included paid, comps, and suites.
- Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that his sources both inside and outside of AEW confirmed that AEW officials had been hopeful of being able to broadcast last month’s All In event on Warner Bros Discovery’s MAX service. Meltzer reported that the reason why AEW decided to air the event as a traditional pay-per-view event was due to WBD officials had informed them that the tech needed for MAX to broadcast a live wrestling event was not ready in time for AEW’s decision. Meltzer also reported that another issue was that AEW would have needed to secure a new deal in order to air the event on MAX which they were not able to do in time for it.
