AEW Dynamite Grand Slam 2023 Notes: Two New Champions, Jon Moxley Suffers Injury, Sammy Guevara Joins Don Callis Family

Eddie Kingston Defeats Claudio Castagnoli for ROH World Title at AEW Grand Slam 2023

Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite Grand Slam 2023 show at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York featured Eddie Kingston defeating Claudio Castagnoli in a ROH World Championship & NJPW Strong Openweight Championship, Title vs. Title match.

The finish to this match involved Castagnoli blocking one of Kingston’s chops and countered with a snap lariat and headbutt for nearfall. Claudio then hit an Anvil Elbow strike and attempted a Ricola Bomb only for Kingston to counter with a hurricanrana pin for a nearfall. This led to Castagnoli hitting an European Uppercut and a Ricola Bomb for a nearfall in return. After Castagnoli picked up Kingston to attack him, Kingston struck first with multiple Urakens and a Northern Lights Bomb for a nearfall. Kingston attempted a powerbomb that was blocked by Castagnoli which led to Kingston hitting another Uraken and a Ganso Bomb for the pinfall victory.

As a result of his victory, Kingston retained his NJPW Strong Openweight title and became the new ROH World Champion.

Following the match, Kingston and Castagnoli shook hands in the middle of the ring before Castagnoli left.


Rey Fenix Defeats Jon Moxley for AEW International Title & Moxley Suffered Injury

Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite Grand Slam 2023 show at the Arthur Ashe Stadium also featured Rey Fenix defeating Jon Moxley to become the new AEW International Champion.

The finish to this match featured Moxley hitting a curb stomp to Fenix that spiked him on the ramp and followed it with a piledriver in the ring for the nearfall. Moxley then attempted an Avalanche Death Rider only for Fenix to escape and countered with a Senton Atomic. Fenix then hit a Fenix Driver for a three count that referee Rick Knox did not follow through with due to some confusion leading to the crowd being angry. Fenix then picked up Moxley again and hit another Fenix Driver leading to a three count by the ref this time for the pinfall victory.

Following the match, Moxley was not shown on camera and was being attended to by referee Knox in the ring. During the ad break, those at the venue stated on social media that Moxley was being given medical treatment by AEW doctors but was able to walk to the back on his own. This was confirmed by AEW commentator Excalibur after the show had returned from its ad break.


Sammy Guevara Loses to Chris Jericho at AEW Grand Slam, Joins Don Callis Family

Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite Grand Slam 2023 show at the Arthur Ashe Stadium also featured a singles match between Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara.

This match was won by Jericho after he countered Guevara’s top rope Shooting Star Press with a Codebreaker for the pinfall victory.

Following the match, Jericho offered a handshake to Guevara which Guevara accepted. This ended up being just a ruse on Guevara’s end and gave a swift kick to Jericho’s yambag region. As Guevara stood over a fallen Jericho, Don Callis came down to the ring and congratulated Guevara for what he did and the two walked away together.
