As noted before, Drew McIntyre’s contract with WWE is currently expected to expire by early 2024 but talks between the two sides for a potential new deal had stalled for the foreseeable future. McIntyre has also be out of action for WWE since this past April’s WrestleMania 39 event due to an unknown health issue.
Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that his sources stated that the holdup for McIntyre’s return to WWE is basically a creative-related issue and not an injury-issue at this point. McIntyre and WWE officials reportedly are currently split on return plans for him and McIntyre will return once both sides manage to agree to a plan. Meltzer reported that one potential plan for his return could involve him turning heel and feuding with Seth Rollins for WWE’s new World Heavyweight Championship.
In regards to McIntyre’s current contract status, Meltzer reported that WWE officials do have the option to freeze and extend his contract to add in his current injury-related absence meaning that his current contract could potentially now expire at a later date than previously believed.
In regards to McIntyre’s future in WWE, Meltzer reported that McIntyre has yet to ask for a potential release from his contract nor have both sides yet to agree to terms for a potential new deal.
