Tony Schiavone Comments on His “It’s Sting” Intro Phrase in AEW & Past Usage in WCW

A recent virtual fan signing event for Highsports Superstore featured AEW commentator Tony Schiavone as the guest. One of the topics discussed included Schivaone’s thoughts on his famous “It’s Sting!” phrase for Sting’s entrances in AEW and if he used the same line in the past during his time in WCW.

“This line, ‘It’s Sting!’ It’s like, I asked Conrad [Thompson] on our podcast, I said, ‘Did I really used to say it’s Sting!?’ And he said, ‘Yeah.’ I said, ‘Really?’ He said, ‘Yeah…’ I guess it was when he was ‘The Crow’ and okay. I know to say it now but that shows you… It just got away from me I guess. As everything else does.”

Penelope Ford Comments on Almost Getting a Name Change in AEW & Origin of Her Ring Name

A recent virtual fan signing event for Captain’s Corner featured Kip Sabian and Penelope Ford as the guests. One of the topics discussed included Ford revealing that AEW had originally planned to give her a new ring name as part of their early plans for her in the company.

Kip Sabian – “It was us, I think (who pitched being together on AEW TV), was the original, right? Did we pitch that? I can’t remember. I think we did. Did we pitch it? I honestly can’t remember. I remember I was doing the babyface gimmick which —”
Penelope Ford – “No, they wanted to change my name.”
Sabian – “Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.”
Ford – “And yeah, because we had a storyline out of it.”
Sabian – “No, but prior to that when they first — I can’t remember how we came about, just end up working together. I remember the promos. It was like at Revolution or it was like a —”
Ford – “I remember I said, ‘Why be bad when you can be superbad?’”
Sabian – “We had a promo backstage about it, I remember that. I can’t remember. I can’t remember if it was our idea, maybe it was our idea.”
Ford – “I don’t know.”

Ford also stated that Drew Gulak’s wife was the person who came up with the idea for her “Penelope Ford” ring name.

“How’d I get my name? Drew Gulak’s wife came up with the name based off of Wreck-It Ralph’s ‘Vanellope’. Yup, and she drove a little pink car and they were like, ‘Oh, well Penelope’s long so you need something that’s easy to chant so Ford…’ One syllable.”
