This past Wednesday’s Lucha Libre AAA Noche de Campeones 2022 event in Acapulco, Mexico featured Sammy Guevara and Tay Melo being stripped of their AAA World Mixed Tag Team Championship over travel and booking-related issues. This event also featured Dragon Lee and Dralistico defeating FTR to become the new AAA World Tag Team Champions, which was also notable for Lee announcing afterwards that he had recently signed a contract with WWE.
Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that his sources stated that AAA and AEW’s working partnership is still currently expected to continue despite the recent rumors of AAA being interested in forming a working partnership with WWE. Those same sources reportedly also stated that AAA officials recently made changes to their booking policy for AEW talent for future events. These changes include no longer booking AEW talents to win their belts except for Kenny Omega due to their difficulties in securing dates and travel for AEW talents in Mexico.
Meltzer reported that FTR had received a lot of praise by AAA officials over their work in the company. Dax Harwood reportedly had also received added praise for working at their recent event despite him currently dealing with a lingering injury issue. Meltzer also reported that AAA officials are currently interested in bringing back FTR for potential future work in the company.
In regards to the decision for Lee and Dralistico to defeat FTR for the AAA World Tag Team Championship, Meltzer reported that this was due to AAA officials wanting to finish up their year-long title chasing storyline for Lee and Drastico despite knowing that Lee was leaving the company right afterwards. Another reason reportedly was due to this past Wednesday event was the last date left in FTR’s current deal with the company.
