As noted before, this past Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite show featured a promo segment by CM Punk that included unplanned shots at Hangman Adam Page. This incident revolved around Punk being upset at Page for some time over issues regarding the content of a promo by Page during the build for their AEW World Championship match at this past May’s Double or Nothing 2022 event.
Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that his sources stated that AEW has been dealing with some serious backstage drama involving many of their top talents that has gotten much worse in recent weeks. These sources stated that the drama originated with Colt Cabana’s removal from Dark Order and him no longer being used on AEW television. AEW CEO Tony Khan reportedly had planned to cut Cabana but was talked out of the decision by others within the company and decided to sign and use him for Ring of Honor instead.
Meltzer reported that even if Cabana’s situation had not been the catalyst, there were other serious issues going around backstage that would have led to something else being the cause instead.
Meltzer reported that the current feeling within AEW’s locker room is that the backstage drama has reached a point that some talents are “close to their breaking point” if things do not get settled and resolved.
Meltzer stated:
“But even if (Punk’s Page callout) didn’t happen, it was probably going to happen for something else just given the nature of the different personalities involved. It feels like a number of people are close to their breaking point if things don’t get settled.”
