More on Why WWE Dropped Tag Titles Unification Match for WrestleMania Backlash 2022
WWE’s upcoming WrestleMania Backlash 2022 event this Sunday in Providence, Rhode Island was originally planned to feature Roman Reigns defending his Universal Championship in the main event and a Tag Team Championship Unification match between The Usos and RK-Bro. WWE recently announced that this event would feature a 6-Man Tag Team match between The Bloodline (The Usos & Reigns) vs. RK-Bro & Drew McIntyre as the main event instead.
Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that his sources stated that WWE officials had always planned for the 6-Man Tag Team match to be on the card for the event and never had any real plans to do a Tag Team Unification match despite teasing it on WWE programming. These same sources also stated that WWE officials also wanted to hold off on doing McIntyre vs. Reigns for the Universal Championship and have the match take place at one of their stadium events this summer.
In regards to the RAW and SmackDown Tag Team Championships, Meltzer reported that Vince McMahon currently does not have any plans to unify the tag titles any time soon. The current belief within the company is that doing a unification match would be a bad idea since the company is not ending their brand split any time soon.
WWE Reportedly Interested in Signing W. Morrissey
This past Wednesday’s episode of AEW Dynamite in Baltimore, Maryland featured Wardlow facing off against a mystery opponent, who was revealed to be Impact Wrestling talent W. Morrissey.
Andrew Zarian reported in a recent episode of The Mat Men Pro Wrestling podcast that his sources stated that WWE officials are currently interested in potentially signing Morrissey to a contract with the company. These same sources stated that WWE officials were impressed with Morrissey’s performance against Wardlow as the reason behind their current interest in him.
Zarian stated:
“I got a couple of messages about him from people. People wanting to know when his contract ends …
I’m not gonna say that WWE is gonna take him but I can tell you that WWE is definitely impressed by him. There’s no way around it, man. I got a message last night while he’s coming out and somebody wrote, ‘did you see this F’N guy?'”
