This past Friday’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown featured the official announcement of the Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns match at WrestleMania 38 will now be held as a title unification match.
Dave Meltzer reported in a recent episode of the Wrestling Observer Radio that his sources stated that WWE currently does not have any long term plans to only have a single top championship in the company. Those same sources stated that WWE is currently planning to have a unified top champion for a very short term period and then will introduce a new major top title similar in idea to how they handled the debut of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in 2002.
In regards to the reason given for not having a single top champion for the long term, Meltzer stated “I was told that it is not feasible in the modern environment to not have each brand, given the two networks, have a champion. So this would be a unification match and then they will — not forget about it — but there will be two champions.”
In regards to the status of certain talents for WWE’s WrestleMania 38 event, PWInsider’s Mike Johnson reported that his sources stated that the company currently does not have any plans for Alexa Bliss to compete at the event. Johnson reported that Bayley is currently planned to only make her return after the event. Johnson reported that Asuka is currently ready to make her return but will only do so once creative plans are in place either for the event or afterwards.
