Kenny Omega Retains AAA Championship Against Andrade, Ric Flair Appears in Andrade’s Corner (Update)

Kenny Omega defeated Andrade El Idolo to retain the AAA Mega Championship at AAA Triplemanía XXIX tonight in Mexico City.

Omega won with a belt shot and One Winged Angel onto the belt as the ref was being distracted by Konnan, who was at ringside accompanying Omega.

Ric Flair accompanied Andrade, who is dating his daughter Charlotte, and even got involved in the match. As the referee was knocked down at one point, Omega tried to hit Andrade with a chair, but Flair got in the ring and stopped him, then he and Andrade took turns giving chops to Omega. Konnan then got into the ring and Flair chopped him down, then Flair gave a Figure Four Leg Lock to Konnan while Andrade locked one on Omega.

Flair requested and was granted his release from WWE earlier this month. It was reported by Dave Meltzer this week that he’s likely headed to AEW once he’s legally able. It’s not clear if he has a non-compete.

Update

According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, Andrade was scheduled to win the title from Omega at Triplemania, but AEW requested that Omega not lose the match. Meltzer speculated that it was because they didn’t want Omega to lose two nights in a row, since he just lost the Impact World Championship to Christian Cage at Rampage the night before.

AEW has control over the finishes of Omega matches in other promotions, Meltzer added.

At the end of the Omega vs. Andrade match, Andrade signaled that he wanted a rematch, so they may run it back eventually, with Andrade taking the title as originally planned.
