More on Maki Itoh’s Surprise Appearance at AEW Revolution
Sunday’s AEW Revolution 2021 event featured a pre-show women’s tag team match. Prior to the start of the match, Britt Baker revealed that Rebel/Reba would not be competing due to an “injury” and instead announced Maki Itoh as her new tag partner.
Dave Meltzer reported in a recent episode of the Wrestling Observer Radio that the reason why AEW did not advertise Itoh’s appearance beforehand was due to AEW officials being concerned over potential travel issues. Itoh reportedly had wrestled for Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling’s Princess Max Heart Tournament Final event on Saturday in Japan and took a flight to the United States afterwards.
Meltzer reported that due to the short time window, a flight delay or any other notable delay would have prevented Itoh from being able to appear in time for AEW’s event. This reportedly was the reason for AEW’s decision to keep Baker’s mystery partner as a surprise leading into the event.
