AEW vs. NXT Week 72 Viewership Update

As noted before, the February 17th episodes of AEW Dynamite and WWE NXT resulted in Dynamite generating around 747,000 viewers and a #4 18-49 key demographic ranking while NXT generated around 713,000 viewers and a #39 18-49 key demographic ranking.

This week’s issue of the Wresting Observer Newsletter provided more details for both shows that week.

Dave Meltzer reported that AEW’s show skewed the youngest for sports programming that week although it was only ahead by a few percentage points from an English Premiere League soccer game that aired on Monday that week. NXT’s show reportedly was one of their oldest skewed shows since the move to the USA Network.

In terms of head-to-head competition with NBA and NHL, AEW reportedly beat the NBA’s game in terms of key demographic ratings at 0.31 compared to a 0.25 for the NBA but missed tying it in overall viewership by around 2,000 viewers. Both AEW and NXT’s shows beat the NHL’s game, which drew 439,000 viewers, a 0.11 key demographic rating, and a #66 18-49 key demographic ranking.

The January 24th episodes of AEW Dynamite and WWE NXT saw AEW gain a sizable amount in viewership while NXT rose in viewership and gained a sizable increase in key demographic rankings. AEW continued their advantage over NXT in regards of key demographic viewership.

AEW drew 831,000 viewers and a #5 ranking in the 18-49 demographic while NXT drew 734,000 and a #24 ranking in the 18-49 demographic.

Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that in terms of key demographic viewership, AEW had 452,000 viewers while NXT had 233,000 viewers. AEW’s biggest increase was with their Males 35-49 group at 18.6% higher and their only decline was with their Males 18-34 group at 9.6% lower than last week’s show. NXT’s biggest increase was with their Females 18-34 group at 130% higher and their biggest decline was with their Males 18-34 group at 35.3% lower than last week’s show.

In terms of quarter-hour breakdowns, AEW reportedly won seven out of eight quarters for overall viewership and all eight quarters for key demographic viewership. NXT reportedly won the second quarter for overall viewership.

In terms of the main event quarter, AEW reportedly had 827,000 for overall viewership and 457,000 for key demographic viewership for the Lance Archer vs. Rey Fenix match. NXT reportedly had 743,000 for overall viewership and 241,000 for key demographic viewership for the Karrion Kross vs. Santos Escobar match.

In terms of the one million viewership mark, AEW reportedly averaged around 1,002,000 viewers during the Sting & Darby Allin vs. Team Taz brawl segment and hit over one million viewers during portions of the Hangman Adam Page vs. Isaiah Kassidy match.

In terms of yearly comparisons, AEW was down 3.9% in overall viewership but was up 16.7% in key demographic viewership compared to the same week last year. NXT was up 2.4% in overall viewership but down 21.7% in key demographic viewership.

AEW Dynamite started off with around 832,000 viewers and their biggest gain of the night was the Sting, Darby Allin, & Team Taz segment, Miro, Kip Sabian & Penelope Ford interview segment, and the Jake Hager vs. Brandon Cutler match which gained 75,000 viewers. AEW’s biggest decline of the night was the Young Bucks family backstage segment and the Ricky Starks & Brian Cage vs. Varsity Blonds match which lost 67,000 viewers.

WWE NXT started off with around 800,000 viewers and their biggest gain of the night was the start of early half of the Karrion Kross vs. Santos Escobar match which gained 86,000 viewers. NXT’s biggest decline of the night was the Cameron Grimes video segment and the Drake Maverick & Killian Dain vs. Grizzled Young Veterans match which lost 106,000 viewers. NXT’s overrun gained an additional 50,000 viewers to end the night.
