AEW CEO Tony Khan held a media call on Tuesday to promote tonight’s “Winter is Coming” themed episode of AEW Dynamite.
Among the topics discussed included Khan revealing that tonight’s episode of AEW Dynamite will be formatted like a PPV event in terms of having more wrestling than usual. Khan also stated that the AEW World Championship match between Kenny Omega and Jon Moxley will be held under a 60 minute time limit and TNT has given them an overrun for tonight’s show if needed.
On the topic of Brodie Lee’s recent absence from AEW television, Khan did not discuss any details regarding his situation but stated that he hopes Lee will be able to make his return soon.
On the topic of AEW signing a lot of talent, Khan stated that under normal business situations, the company would have released some of their roster by now to make room for their new signings. He decided against doing so due to wrestlers having a hard time getting new work in wrestling during the on-going coronavirus pandemic.
During the media call, Khan revealed that AEW’s current television contract with TNT is for around $175 million. Khan also stated that reason why Omega vs. Moxley is happening now and not at a future AEW pay-per-view event is due to him wanting to make Dynamite’s big shows feel special and also due to television being their biggest revenue generator.
On the topic of Jon Moxley’s status for New Japan Pro Wrestling’s upcoming Wrestle Kingdom 15 event, Khan stated that Moxley currently is not scheduled to be traveling to Japan nor making an appearance at the show.
Khan stated that he has been working on plans to debut a Trios Championship at some point in the future, possibly next year.
Khan stated that the “Winter is Coming” tag line for tonight’s episode of AEW Dynamite was inspired by Game of Thrones but he has never watched the show although his mother is a huge fan. Khan stated that one of the benefits of AEW’s working relationship with WarnerMedia is the ability to use their IPs for AEW show ideas, after asking permission to do so first.
Khan also stated that he currently has big plans for AEW Dynamite’s upcoming Christmas week, New Year’s Eve week, and next year’s Beach Break themed shows.
