NXT Champion and now former NXT North American Champion Keith Lee relinquished the North American title tonight on NXT, saying that he wants others to have an opportunity at the belt as he defends the NXT Championship as much as he possibly can.
“I will defend the NXT Championship as much as I possibly can, but at this point in time, I am relinquishing NXT North American Championship,” Lee said in a promo that opened the show. “Not an easy decision, but it’s an effort to make sure that other people get the same opportunities that I had. And with the caveat that as many people as possible have an opportunity to win this championship.”
NXT General Manager William Regal then said that there will be a five way ladder match at NXT TakeOver XXX on August 22 to determine a new NXT North American Champion. Over the next few weeks, there will be a series of triple threat matches to determine the five competitors.
Tonight on NXT, Bronson Reed defeated Johnny Gargano and Roderick Strong to earn the first spot in the match. Next week, it’ll be Finn Balor vs. Timothy Thatcher vs. Dexter Lumis for another spot. The other qualifying matches haven’t been announced yet.
