As noted before, Jim Cornette resigned earlier this week from the National Wrestling Alliance due to backlash against comments he made during this past Tuesday’s episode of NWA Powerrr. The incident occurred during the Nick Aldis vs. Trevor Murdoch match which resulted in the episode being pulled from NWA’s YouTube channel shortly after its airing and replaced several hours later with an edited version with Cornette’s comments removed.
Dave Meltzer reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter that NWA officials gave Cornette the option of issuing an apology for his comments, but Cornette refused, resulting in his departure from the company.
Meltzer reported that NWA Vice President David Lagana held himself accountable for his mistake of not editing out Cornette’s comments prior to the airing of this week’s episode. Lagana reportedly blamed the mistake on simply being exhausted from editing work at the time and allowing Cornette’s comments to slip by.
Meltzer also reported that a source very close to the situation stated that there have been other lines that were seen as “poor taste” that were edited out prior to airing.
It was also reported that some within NWA’s management had been unhappy with Cornette for some time due to him becoming very vocal about his anti-AEW feelings on his podcast. The feeling by those within management was that Cornette’s actions were not a good look for the company and was causing some negativity towards their own product.
Prior to this week’s incident on NWA Powerrr, Cornette had already caused another controversy for the company regarding disparaging comments he made towards AEW’s ring announcer Justin Roberts implying that he was a pedophile. Cornette stated in a recent episode of his podcast that “Justin Roberts looks like he ought to be registered somewhere to be around children. He’s so happy. You see a f***ing guy dressed up like that with that big smile coming across his face coming towards your kids, run.”
