WWE held a post-WrestleMania 34 media call at the WWE HQ in Stamford, Connecticut with co-presidents George Barrios and Michelle Wilson as the speakers. Some of the topics discussed included updated subscriber numbers for the WWE Network, WrestleMania 34’s gate revenue, WWE’s fiscal year expectations for the Network, and more.
On the topic of the WWE Network’s current subscriber numbers, Barrios stated that the WWE Network set a new record high of 2.124 million subscribers as of Sunday’s Wrestlemania 34 event. This is a 9% increase compared to last year’s Wrestlemania update which was 1.949 million. As with past Network announcements, this number included both free and paid subscribers combined with the total paid subscribers also reaching a new record high.
On the topic of WrestleMania 34 itself, Barrios stated WrestleMania 34 broke the all-time record for highest grossing event in Mercedes-Benz Superdome history with $14.1 million generated in gate revenue. The venue’s previous record was $10.9 million set by the WWE in 2014 for Wrestlemania 30.
Barrios switched the topic back to the WWE Network and stated the company is currently predicting another year of record setting growth for the service. The company is also predicting around an 8% increase in total subscribers for the fiscal second quarter compared to the same quarter last year.
During the Q&A portion of the media call, a question regarding the U.S. vs. Global split for the WWE Network’s growth was asked. Barrios stated this will be the topic of a future media call. He also stated the localization of content for their global markets has been one of their main priorities for the Network’s long term plans.
When asked about WWE’s recent involvement with Facebook, Barrios stated the company is currently happy with the numbers generated for their live events on the service. He also stated they are not worried about Facebook’s recent data scandal involving Cambridge Analytica although they are monitoring how Facebook handles privacy going forward.
When asked a question regarding the company’s recent deal in Saudi Arabia, Barrios stated more details will be revealed in a future media call.
When asked a question regarding potential plans for a tiered subscription system for the Network, Barrios stated this is something WWE has considered as an idea for the future and it will happen sooner rather than later.
