Kenny Omega was interviewed on Wrestling Observer Radio and was very blunt about his future.
Omega said flat out that he will “not be at the Royal Rumble” and that he didn’t want to disappoint fans or take attention away from the other matches.
He then said that he has not yet signed a new New Japan Pro Wrestling contract, but will be flying out on Tuesday to sign a one year deal and he would be staying with NJPW for “at least one more year,” obviously leaving open a possible move to WWE after that. Omega said that WWE has a very deep roster and he would likely be able to make more of an “impact” in NJPW right now.
Below is a transcript of some of his announcement and you can listen to the audio here.
“I’m just going to say it. I will not be at the Royal Rumble. I don’t want people to have this false hope of me showing up in the Royal Rumble and then not being there, and being disappointed, when there’s a fantastic match happening with fantastic competitors in it.
I have not yet come to terms with a new New Japan contract. However, I am flying back out in mid February to renegotiate and it’s looking positive. There’s always that small percentage where the whole thing might go belly up, but I’m just gonna be honest. It’s looking like I will be with New Japan for at least one more year.
There are things in Japan that I feel would be left unfinished. And with the momentum that I have right now with the company… And let’s face it, WWE has a very diverse roster. Very deep. They really don’t need talent right now. And I feel that I could help more so in New Japan right now and make an impact more there than I could with WWE.”
