Peta has issued a press release in which Austin Aries challenges his fans to try being a vegan. The ad is for peta2, the division of PETA aimed at younger audiences. You can see video and photo of the ad below, which features the title “I Want You To Try Vegan!” In it, Aries says, “Try going vegan. I dare you!”
In a video interview with peta2, he said: “Animals are not ours to eat. [I]t doesn’t feel right to exploit other living creatures for my pleasure, because I’m proof that you don’t need those things to sustain yourself. You have a choice.”
The ad notes that athletes who don’t eat meat experience increased energy, strength, and stamina. It claims that vegan foods have a lot of nutrients and provide all the protein and complex carbohydrates that athletes need. The press release states that vegan meals “also spare animals immense suffering on factory farms, in slaughterhouses, and on the decks of fishing boats—and vegans decrease their carbon footprint, as the meat industry is a major producer of the greenhouse gasses that contribute to climate change.”
Aries joins a list of athletes and celebrities working with peta2 that includes UFC fighter Thiago Alves, pro surfer Tia Blanco, mixed martial arts fighter Jake Shields, Dave Navarro, Ty Lawson, and Metta World Peace
