Bank of America partners with ServiceNation on 2011 initiative; hundreds of bank employees to serve nationwide

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — Americans from all walks of life will unite to honor active military, veterans and military families this Veterans Day week culminating in 11 large-scale service events in 11 major U.S. cities on Veterans Day (November 11). It’s all part of ServiceNation’s Mission Serve initiative which brings together the civilian and military communities through service and volunteerism. Americans who wish to volunteer in honor of those who have served in the military will also be able to log onto www.MissionServe.org to find service projects in their own region.

The initiative’s website– www.MissionServe.org –highlights all 11 projects, allowing users to find events and service projects all across the United States and encouraging those volunteering to do so in honor of an active military member or veteran who has inspired them.

This year’s initiative has a high-profile social media component, led by prominent celebrities Dwayne Johnson and Miley Cyrus who will mobilize their millions of Twitter and Facebook followers to spread the word about Mission Serve and volunteer in support of active military, veterans and military families.

Some project highlights include:

On the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickman in Hawaii, ServiceNation: Mission Serve is organizing the planting of an American Heart Association Teaching Garden in conjunction with a U.S. Chamber of Commerce Hiring our Heroes job fair attended by First Lady Michelle Obama.

In Tampa, FL, Bank of America employees will join with active duty military to serve at a local equine therapy center.

In Dallas, employees of Dell, Inc. team with local nonprofit partners and the USO to refurbish a Boys & Girls Club to better meet the needs of the community.

In San Diego, in partnership with the San Diego Padres Foundation and Bank of America, military family members will create “reverse” care packages for civilians in need.

In New York City, Bank of America employees partner with the Yankees, USO of Metropolitan New York and veteran volunteers to create Big Apple care packages for military service members deploying and those serving in Afghanistan.

A complete list of the initiative’s signature service projects can be found at http://www.servicenation.org/missionserve/pages/veterans-day-111111 .

“Service has become a meeting place for veterans and civilians,” said Chris Marvin, former Blackhawk helicopter pilot, who was wounded in Afghanistan. “Both communities understand and embrace service, and as we welcome a growing population of veterans returning from combat, it’s imperative that our communities engage them by challenging them to serve here at home. Our veterans are civic assets, not only because of the service they have given overseas, but also because of how they are willing to serve in our communities. We firmly believe that the integration of the military and civilian communities begins with shared service.” Marvin is currently director of Civilian-Military Partnerships for ServiceNation.

For more than 90 years, Bank of America has supported the U.S. military through a wide range of philanthropic, volunteer and line of business activities and is a strong supporter of the Mission Serve initiative. This year, bank employees will work side by side with veterans, nonprofit organizations and local citizens at volunteer events in New York City, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Tampa, FL, San Diego, CA and Honolulu, HI. In addition, Bank of America has responded to the call to action, organizing 17 additional volunteer service projects to take place on or around Veterans Day in communities where their employees live and work. These efforts are part of the bank’s broader commitment to help move communities and the economy forward.
