Here is the full weekend box office report:
Fast Five blew away the competition to open at the #1 spot at the box office this weekend. The action sequel starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson grossed $83.6 million in its first weekend, the biggest of the franchise by far. The film opened in 3,644 theaters for an average of $22,950. It is the biggest April opening of all-time as well as easily the biggest opening of 2011 to date, equaling more than the next two openings (Rio and Rango) combined. The film has a worldwide gross of $165.0 million and its budget was $125 million.
Fox’s animated film Rio slipped one spot to #2 to make way for Fast Five. The family film grossed $14.4 million in its third weekend. The film now has a domestic total of $103.6 million and a worldwide total of $364.3 million on a $90 million budget.
Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family also dropped a spot, down to #3. The film brought in $10.1 million in its second weekend, a 60% drop. That is pretty standard for Perry’s films. The film now has $41.1 million from a budget of $25 million.
Water for Elephants dropped a spot to #4 in its second weekend with $9.1 million. The romantic drama had a 46% drop, just a bit high for its genre. The film has a domestic total now of $32.3 million and a worldwide total of $40.3 million from a $38 million budget.
Prom opened at the #5 spot for the weekend with $5 million. The teen comedy opened in 2,730 theaters for a mere $1,832 per-theater average. The film still stands to be profitable though, as it had a budget of only $8 million.
The animated sequel Hoodwinked: Hood vs. Evil opened at the #6 spot with $4.1 million. It opened in 2,505 theaters for a $1,653 per-theater average. The fairy-tale comedy looks to be a bomb for the Weinstein Company, as it had a budget of $30 million.
Soul Surfer continued to hold on remarkably well as it stayed even at #7 in its fourth week. The biopic drama grossed $3.3 million, a mere 39% drop from the previous week, and now has a total gross of $33.8 million. The budget was $18 million.
Insidious moved up a spot from last weekend, going from #9 to #8 in its fifth week with a $2.7 million take. The horror film has a $48.3 million total off a budget of only $1.5 million.
Hop dropped five spots to #9 in its fifth weekend, grossing $2.6 million. The live action/CGI hybrid family comedy has grossed has a domestic total of $105.3 million and a worldwide total of $163.7 million. The film had a budget of $63 million.
The Source Code held on to its spot in the top ten, staying even at #10 in its fifth weekend. The Jake Gyllenhaal sci-fi action thriller grossed $2.5 million. The film has a domestic total of $48.9 million and a worldwide total of $83.9 million on a $32 million budget.
Dylan Dog: Dead of Night failed to hit the top ten, grossing $885,000 from 875 theaters to rank at #16.
The top 12 box office total was $141.96 million, up 17% from last week and up 55% from the same weekend last year when A Nightmare on Elm Street opened at #1 with $32 million.
