According to Multichannel News, Midway Games completed its sale to Time Warner Inc. on July 10th for $49 million. Midway’s corporate employees have been given 60 days notice that their Chicago offices will be closed. That is approximately 45% of the global workforce of Midway.
In the sale, the San Diego studio that developed the TNA iMPACT! videogame as well as the TNA video game license were not a part of the deal. With Midway in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, those assets will be sold separately. As of right now, there is no word on what will happen to the license or the already in-development second TNA video game if they aren’t sold soon.
UPDATE: The Los Angeles Times is reporting that about 100 developers in its San Diego office, ones who have been working on a the second TNA iMPACT! video game have been let go. The lay offs were a part of a 46% cut of the staff, which is roughly 520 employees in total. Midway is currently looking for a buyer for the California studio, and if one is not found, the studio will be shut down completely. There is still no mention what will happen to the TNA Video Game License if that happens.
